Describe a dysfunctional example of conflict and a functional example of conflict in an organization that you are familiar. What were some of the useful aspects of organizational conflict in this setting? Conflict in the workplace can be both beneficial and or cause a major setback in the company's goals and mission. Dysfunctional conflicts occur when certain situations create “intolerable anxiety, disrupts healthy relationships,” between coworkers that can keep them from accomplishing or diminishing a common goal (Vito et al., 2019). An example of a dysfunctional conflict is gossip in the workplace. We have all had our fair share of gossip in the workplace and how it can ruin an organization's mission and environment. When gossip overtakes the common goal and makes it into a personal conversation it can become toxic in the workplace. It can produce an overwhelming amount of frustration, unhealthy anxiety, and withdrawal from the workplace. When it comes to functional conflict according to Vito, Reed, & More it can produce positive effects and yield beneficial outcomes to the mission. An example is putting a goal chart for each department. This may feel like a competition that might produce a lot of conflict. However, it can encourage a unit and motivate others to become creative to yield a better outcome so that their group wins a prize or praise from their company manager. The organizational conflict that is done from a functional conflict can be beneficial to the common goal. It can act as an energy booster and encourage the individuals working in the field to work towards a common goal together. References Vito, G. F., Reed, J. C., & More, H. W. (2019).
