Describe a dysfunctional example of conflict and a functional example of conflict in an organization that you are familiar. What were some of the useful aspects of organizational conflict in this setting? Dysfunctional conflict is "when it creates intolerable anxiety, disrupts healthy relationships, wastes excessive amounts of time or energy, keeps an organization from accomplishing its lawfully prescribed mission (goals and objectives), or leads to destructive behavior" (More, 2020). Functional conflict is the opposite of dysfunctional conflict. While dysfunctional conflict can be toxic this means that those addressing functional conflict reinforces the healthy ways to address conflict within an organization. That being said, for someone who works in the legal realm, conflict is almost always present. Due to the nature of the legal department of an organization, dysfunctional conflict is more likely to occur if employees have a Machiavellian personality type. With that said, a client was in an auto accident and has given permission to sue the insurance company due to the fact that the attorneys could not settle on a settlement amount. Both attorneys handling the case have been going back and forth with filing the suit and not filing the suit due to the costs the office will incur if the suit brings no resolution. One attorney believes that the case is not worth suing for and the other attorney believes that no matter the outcome, they have a duty to fulfill the clients desires. Both attorneys have a Machiavellian personality type and cannot agree on the course of action. They have now wasted time and energy revisiting the conversation and ultimately because they could not agree, one of the attorneys dropped the case without informing the other, leaving the client with no resolution. This type of conflict is dysfunctional because they kept the organization from accomplishing their goal, which is doing what is in the best interest of the client. If this scenario was taken with the functional approach, they would have agreed to disagree and bring in a mediator or third party to help weigh out the options and find a solution that best suits the organization and fits the needs of the client.
