Self-Assessment 2 Self-Assessment Successfully navigating change is key to survival in any organization. With change, one must consider internal aspects objectively to determine their ability to change. This can be done in a few different ways, but the most common of which is a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. Conducting a SWOT analysis permits an easy-to-understand framework that can translate to many different roles in the organization undertaking the change. SWOT seeks to evaluate both internal and external factors that could aid or potentially impede an individual or an organization from successfully completing a task (Sarsby, 2016). To start, two of my most notable strengths are taking criticism as a learning opportunity, as well as accountability. Change requires the ability to take feedback in a constructive fashion, even if it may seem arguably destructive. It allows me to identify my mistakes and will help me determine how to not make that same mistake again. Feedback is important to growth, and especially in an organization that is altering its processes, it is important to take it as a growth opportunity, not a threat. Next, in an organization seeking to implement change, accountability is key. You can be the most knowledgable person in your organization and still make mistakes. Mistakes happen, nobody is perfect. It is important to take ownership of your mistake, and again, look to utilize it as a growth opportunity. I believe I am one of the most accountable for my mistakes and can own up to any faults that I may commit during my day-to-day operations. The next part of the SWOT analysis is weaknesses. My significant weaknesses are impatience and delegation. With impatience, I must work on this immediately. If a task perhaps takes too long, it can lead to impulsivity for me. Impulsiveness can lead to negativity in an organization and potentially throw things off-course. Additionally, when in an organization where I have more seniority over another individual, I sometimes have difficulty delegating tasks
Self-Assessment 3 where I can complete the task myself. Delegating helps people learn how to complete the task easier and helps with any future growth opportunities. The strengths and weaknesses were both internal aspects that I needed to improve on, now to focus on the external, starting with opportunties. Two opportunities that I have to leverage my strengths are my advanced education and prior knowledge from employment. I am currently working on finishing up my degree and can leverage the information obtained during pursuit of my master’s degree to translate it to my professional career. Perhaps it could help with strategy, or task completion. Additionally, I have extensive experience in many different industries. This extensive professional experience has subjected me to many different situations that I can translate to any industry to help with problem solving. Lastly, when it comes to threats, there are a couple threats that I would like to minimize: having competitive advantage in my industry is the most notable concern. There are always new competitors springing up every day, and staying ahead of the competition is also a huge part of what it takes to survive in any industry. Lastly, staying ahead of any technological changes in the industry. This is something that can be handled in a similar fashion to competitive advantage. By staying on top of any technological trends, it is possible that the public can turn to the organization for their needs. Overall, my SWOT analysis reveals that though I do have some quandaries to work on, I am ready to be at the forefront of change. With my ability to communicate effectively to show others that change is not a bad thing, nor is it a threat, I am confident that I can help staff members buy into the proposed acquisition. I am ready to accept the organizational change from this acquisition and lead the change efforts for the organization in the scenario.
