Chapter 14 A. & B. Identify and explain how several (not all) of the various forms of media have shape ‘ethical standards’ within the administration of justice. Media influences our lives everyday but, most people don’t think how the media can influence and shape the ethical standards within the administration of justice. In the textbook on Pg. 30 Walking the walk, there is a story of a man named Captain Brett Crozier who commanded an aircraft carrier. This story is a representation of how media can positively shape our ethical standards within the administrative system. This form of media was a memo leaked which cost Crozier his job for simply caring about the health and safety of his crew members. From there a video surfaced on the internet of him getting a standing ovation from his crew for his duty. This effected our ethical standards because it showed that Crozier was not wrong, but the system was. Next on Pg. 48 of the textbook is another story of how the media helped shape ethical standards. The story talks about how a CEO of a company raised his employees’ salaries because they were very low and lowered his own CEO salary to the same price. He then told the media this and it positively raised ethical standards. This a story from Pg. 162 in the textbook of how the media is affecting the ethical standards within the administration of justice. It shows of how the media got access to police database to show misconduct within officers. This can be looked at positively or negatively. All in all, ALL forms of media can affect and shape our ethical standards within the administration of justice both positively and negatively depending at which way you look at It. The media give us access to form our own opinion and shape our ethical standards off it. You just need to make sure you’re getting a good form of unbiased from the media. C. Toward the end of this chapter is the section title “Ethical Dilemmas and Decisions”. Write about insights you find in this section (or find elsewhere in the book) that describe ways of maintaining ethical standards and leadership. Some ways that I found in this section that describe ways of maintaining ethical standards and leaderships are holding people accountable. A lot of people lost their jobs due to difficult decisions in the aftermath of 9/11 (368). While a lot of these decisions were difficult to make to maintain ethical standards and leaderships most of those individuals had to be held accountable and lose their jobs due to their decisions. Another part of the textbook states “How we face and resolve dilemmas is influenced by our ethical systems and understanding that doing the right thing is not always easy, nor is it necessarily easy to determine what is right. Some of the individuals mentioned earlier were and still are criticized bitterly over their decisions. While some consider them heroes, others consider them traitors. One might agree with their goals and disagree with their actions.” (369). This quote is a great representation of how we can maintain ethical standards and leadership even though there is technically no right or wrong answer about how we act.
