APA 7 th Edition: Expository Essay “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” —John Maxwell, what John Maxwell means is that to be a good leader one must not only be appointed into a position of authority, but you must know what it takes and set the example. Throughout the years the interpretation of a leader has been set by others in leadership roles. Today people are switching their viewpoints to include what their subordinates think of them and how well they can lead others. Over the years there has been extensive research, and they have found that certain characteristics lead to creating a good leader. Three characteristics that make a good leader are integrity, resiliency, and humility. Integrity Integrity is said to be the action of doing the right thing even when no one is around, which is important when one is setting an example for the surrounding people. Establishing a good work environment makes employees want to do more for a leader. It has been proven that behavioral integrity in a leader plays a vital role in the attitude of an employee creating an environment where employees are more susceptible to take risks and to be honest (Javed et al. 2021). Integrity is about creating trust between leaders and their employees to create a work environment that is enjoyable for employees. When leaders have Integrity, they are more likely to do what they say they will do this is known as putting words into action. Integrity in a leader creates trust which makes the trustee do things for the person they trust because they know that they will receive the same treatments (Javed et al. 2021). Trust is the foundation to good leadership, allowing subordinates the ability to trust them is a way a good leader stays in charge. When trust is earned from subordinates to leaders, they will do just about anything for their leaders, in a work environment this is beneficial because they manage to get better results. 2
Resiliency At times we lose employees since there is no resiliency, when your leader is resilient, they tend to take the backlash and shelter their employees creating that strong image of a good leader. During natural disasters people tend to be drawn to stability that is given by leaders who are resilient (Beasley et al. 2016). The world has recently seen what natural disasters can do to businesses with the epidemic of COVID-19. So many businesses went out of business due to the lack of foundational leadership, but of course also the fact that people did not continue business as usual. The businesses that thrived were known to have leaders who were more resilient and knew to take care of their employees before themselves. Resilient leaders are the ones who show up early on when times are unstable and there are a few constraints, they are more likely to stick around and implement changes for the better of the people. (Beasley et al. 2016) Resilient leaders are the ones who are not afraid of change, in fact they adapt to unsettling times. When a good leader is resilient employees never see the hard times because they shelter their employees form the struggle. Humility The first thing people lose when they are put into a leadership role is their humility, being in a higher paying important role can take that effect on people but in return the first thing lost is the respect of from thier subordinates. A humble leader is one who looks within and understands that everyone, to include themselves, have weaknesses they do thinks not for themselves but the greater good (Maldonado et al. 2022). Being able to understand that they are not perfect is something that not many people know how to do. It is important to be self-critical and be able to 3

correct oneself. Humble leaders are usually not prideful and are willing to take criticism to create a more welcoming work environment for their subordinates. During times of natural disasters humble leaders are more likely to succeed because they understand that they are not the know all be all and are willing to adapt and learn new traits. Humble leaders create a better environment for their employees because they are willing to learn (Maldonado et al. 2022). Being able to understand that even in a leadership role they must be willing to learn to adapt is important for setting the example. Good leaders know they aren’t the last resort, they understand they must learn with their subordinates and that is the only way that a corporation can function. They do not rely on their subordinates to do everything; good leaders will always be part of the action. Conclusion The world has learned that to be a good leader one must have integrity, be resilient and remain humble. When someone is a good leader, they create a welcoming work environment that supports employee voice. Good leaders are important to keep the world running with good order. It is also important to remember that they need to include the opinion of subordinates because in the end they are the ones doing the job. When they take everyone’s opinion into consideration, they can create good leaders that in the end will produce results. 4
