M1 IRIS Classroom Management 1 Page Question Your original, unique responses Initial thoughts pps. 1, 2 What elements of effective classroom behavior management are most important to you and why? The elements of effective classroom behavior management that are most important to me would be having clear expectations, cultural competence and building strong relationships. Having clear expectations helps students understand what is expected behavior in the classroom and reduces confusion which can prevent disruptions. Having cultural competence helps create a more inclusive classroom which can foster a sense of belonging and help with positive behavior. Finally, building strong relationships with your students can help promote a safe and trusting atmosphere which can promote respect and less behavioral issues. ACTIVITY: Cultural Influences p. 3.1 a) Gaps in values/beliefs b) Gaps in culture c) Your responses to gaps a. My values and beliefs are based on what I experienced growing up and a gap I have is remembering that not everyone has the same values and beliefs I have. While I believe that everyone should be treated with kindness in respect, many cultures show respect differently than what I was raised to believe. b. Some gaps I have when it comes to different cultures stems from my limited access to different cultures as a child. It also stems from the lack of representation I was exposed to in my curriculum as a child. As an adult I have become more aware of cultural differences but it took a lot of learning on my part. c. Some ways I have actively tried to fix my gaps in cultural awareness and different values have been trying to expose myself to the diverse communities of where I live now and advocating for more inclusivity in all areas of my life such as education (curriculum and lesson planning) and celebrating cultural events around my community and in the classroom.
M1 IRIS Classroom Management 2 ACTIVITY: Culturally Sustaining Practices p. 3.2 Complete and review the results. Reflect on your self-assessment. Discuss your strengths and greatest needs for additional practice. After taking the self-assessment my areas of strength include reflective thinking about children and their “group memberships” (meaning I am aware of how my actions reflect on their behavior). I make strong effort on developing student-teacher relationships and I am sensitive to students cultural and situational behaviors The areas I need to work a bit harder on are making more of an effort to reach out and understand differences, constantly communicating expectations and recognizing students' social and political consciousness. Key Principles p. 4 Which key principle is your strongest suit, and which 2 principles need the most development? The key principle that is my strongest suit would probably be planning early or focusing on the positive. The two principles that need the most development would be being consistent and understanding student diversity. I also think I need to be better at planning high quality instruction as well. Creating Positive Climate (strongest suit) p. 5 Which practice is/would be your strongest suit, and which practice needs the most development? The practice that is my strongest suit would be building and maintaining authentic relationships with students and families. The practice that probably needs the most development in creating a positive climate would be upholding high expectations for all students. This has definitely been a struggle of mine, especially in a special education classroom. I try to keep the same expectations for everyone but because students have different cognitive levels I have a tendency to adjust expectations. Creating Positive Climate (returning strategies) p. 5 Which of the 4 Returning to School strategies are most important to you and why? Of the four returning to school strategies, the one that I believe to be the most important would be communicate, connect and check-in. This is because many of my students have turbulent home lives and I would want to see what kind of support I can provide to them and their families to help make school more engaging and safe for them.

M1 IRIS Classroom Management 3 Creating a Structured Classroom p. 6 What are your priorities in creating an effective classroom environment? I have three top priorities when creating an effective classroom environment. The first is the safety and well-being of my students. I want to be sure that my classroom is a supportive environment that promotes learning and overall well-being. The second is building positive relationships. This is important because it fosters a sense of community and helps support an inclusive environment. The third priority is effective classroom management. Having effective classroom management helps maintain order and minimizes disruptions. Effective Room Arrangement p. 6 What are the 3 most important considerations for effective room arrangement for your grade level? The 3 most important considerations for effective room arrangement at my grade level, which is middle school mild/mod, would be accessibility (making sure the pathways are clear to accommodate mobility), inclusivity (provide options for alternative seating arrangements) and promoting instruction (independent work areas vs group work) Classroom Routines p. 6 Which 2 routines/procedures are easiest for you, and which 2 are hardest? The two routines/procedures that are easiest for me are taking attendance and guided/independent practice. The two routines/procedures that are the hardest for me would be making formative assessments and establishing bell work. After reviewing this portion it has become clear to me that I need to establish a consistent routine for my students in order to help with expectations and behaviors. ACTIVITY: Surface Management Strategies p. 7 How many did you get correct out of 9? Which strategy would be easiest for you? Which would be the most challenging and why? I got all nine correct. The easiest strategies for me are redirecting, proximity control and signaling. Because I work in a special education, these three are something I use on a daily basis. The management strategy I feel may be the most challenging would be removing the object. Oftentimes, when I have tried this, it seems to cause more behaviors. I will have to try different tactics when using this strategy.
M1 IRIS Classroom Management 4 Comprehensiv e Classroom Behavior Management Plan p. 8 Describe how a comprehensive classroom behavior management plan will help you and your students. Having a comprehensive classroom behavior management plan because it fosters a positive and productive learning environment. It helps both educators and students by providing a structured foundation for addressing behaviors, promoting a safe and positive environment, and fostering engaging education. Best Takeaways What are your 3 best takeaways from this IRIS Module? The three best takeaways from this IRIS module are that I need to learn more about cultural inclusivity in my classroom and curriculum, I need to better establish consistent routines in my classroom and establish consistent expectations for everyone in my classroom.
