1. Table2-1 on pg. 47 of the PMBOK Guide, 6th ed., lists 10 Organizational Structure Types. Undertake the necessary research to describe the characteristics of, and prepare simple organizational structure diagrams, for these 4 types: Functional Muti-divisional Matrix Project-Oriented Please find the structural diagrams for the organizational structures below: a. Functional Organization: Functional organisation is an organisation where people are grouped in their area of specialisation and supervised by the functional manager with the expertise in the same field. Suitable for an organization which has an ongoing operation e.g. Manufacturing The advantage of this type of organization is that the employees have career growth path. There is a clear chain of command. And the disadvantage is Project manager has no formal authority. b. Muti-divisional: in this the company is organized along the products or processes etc. The teams are divided individually. The project manager in a multidivisional organisation has no to little authority. A company will use a divisional set up like this when one division is sufficiently independent from another, however this kind of structure can also add some accounting and other overhead. 2 Functional organization President Team 1 Manager Staff Team 2 Manager Staff Team 3 Manager Staff Team 4 Manager Staff

c. Matrix d. Project-Oriented 2. Which of the 4 types listed above does your group think (consensus) best represents the current organizational structure at Fleming College? Explain why? The organization structure of Fleming college is Functional Organization. As in functional organization structure the authority lies in the functional manager, i.e. the President of the college. It is a hierarchical type of organization structure where employees are grouped as per their specialized area i.e., Sales Dept, Marketing Dept, Finance Dept, Legal Dept, HR Dept, Operations Dept, IT Dept and Health. These departments are supervised by a functional manager with expertise in the same field. 3. If someone from Marketing at Fleming were asked to manage a project to develop a new external website promoting Fleming College, how would the type of organizational structure at Fleming impact the project. Identify both the benefits and constraints imposed. Fleming College is an educational institution with a functional organizational structure, an employee from the Marketing Department must report to his/her functional manager or a reporting manager in a particular organizational structure. In the centralized organizational structure, the employees or staff are assigned by the areas of specialization. Furthermore, the project manager has little or no authority to finalize the decisions. 3 President Product 1 Team A Manager Staff Team B Manager staff team C manager Staff Product 2 Team A Manager Staff Team B Manager staff team C manager Staff Product 3 Team A Manager Staff Team B Manager staff team C manager Staff
Functional organizational structure example Source: AIHR.COM The impact of the traditional organizational structure can be power and authority, budget controls are in the hands of the functional manager, also project managers have little or no role when it comes to resource allocation as well. Some of the benefits of the functional organization structure: The project will be delivered within a basic functional organizational structure without bringing any changes and implementation to the same. Employees must follow only one supervisor with a clear chain of command, a senior manager can control and give directions to junior employees. Some of the constraints of the functional organization can be: Interactions between functional units could not be well integrated. Rather than considering the best interests of the project, functional expert typically just has an interest in their project segment.   The project manager and other project management staff must divide their responsibilities between the project and their regular work. Resources would not report to the project manager directly. 4. Figure 1-2 on pg. 8 of the PMBOK Guide 6th ed. identifies 4 fundamental categories that may act upon organizations resulting in the initiation of a project. These include: Meet regulatory, legal, or social requirements 4
Satisfy stakeholder requests or needs Implement or change business or technological strategies Create, improve, or fix products, processes, or services Undertake research to identify at least 1 recently completed or ongoing project, anywhere in the world that would fit in one category. In a 1 slide, describe the project, including: project location the project's unique product, service or result Global COVID-19 Vaccination Campaigns: Based on our team’s research, this project happens to still be ongoing. According to Agrawal et al. (2023) “The global COVID-19 vaccination campaign is the largest public health campaign in history, with over 2 billion people fully vaccinated within the first 8 months”. Numerous countries around the world are currently engaged in COVID-19 vaccination campaigns. Canada is not an exception. An example would be when Funmilayo one of the group members went to Walmart at Lansdowne at parkway, where she saw a signpost for covid 19 vaccination at the shopping Centre and in fact, it was for free. This means that the vaccination awareness is still ongoing. Also, another example would be when Sanisha another member of the team visited Lotus Dental clinic and was asked to show a proof of coronavirus vaccination card and if you are unable to show a proof, you are asked to get vaccinated before you are attended to. This shows the spread of global covid 19 vaccination campaign. These projects involve mass vaccination efforts to immunize populations against the coronavirus. The goal is to achieve widespread immunity and control the spread of the virus.
