Identify the concept of 'clan control', and how it is used in an empowered organization. Clan control is a type of control based on shared experience and shared values. An example of this as stated in class is seating in specific settings. In our class hybrid of Principles of Management, we are all sitting in the same spots that we did on day one. seating arrangements we're not specifically spoken about prior to or after the first day of class. Our class has a shared goal, to pass the class. While passing the class and our seating arrangement have no direct correlation there is an unspoken rule that everyone sits in the same place each class. While if someone sat in a completely different spot it would not affect the pass or failure of any student within the class it would unintentionally cause someone to feel outside of their comfort zone due to the fact that we have been in the class for almost the entire semester and each person has their spot. This is an example of Clan control. There was no Vote or discussion about what would happen after day one. Everyone automatically knew that they would stay seated in the spot they chose on the first day despite there being no assigned seating. You can find many instances of Clan control within our day-to-day lives. while in the business environment Clan control can have its benefits. While control is in the name it is not a direct type of control. Clan control is indirect meaning it is not specifically stated it is a shared experience. This type of control within a business would be most beneficial in a creative environment. due to its indirect nature, it would not be beneficial for a very structured and rule oriented organization. The reason it would most benefit a creative organization is the ability to have some flexibility. An example of this would be Google. Google as an organization relies on Clan control by allowing their workers to use 20% of their work week on their own innovative
ideas while allowing managers to have two or three days a week where employees can come and Pitch those ideas to them. This is not a written rule that employees have to spend 20% of their work week on a new idea. It is Clan control due to the flexibility of allowing employees to choose if and when they want to work on their own ideas for the company. This is beneficial due to allowing employees their own time to speak to their managers in an informal setting. In conclusion, Clan control could be a valuable asset to many businesses that want to actually hear ideas from their lower level employees. Each person within the organization's team has to commit to these unspoken rules like Google has. While one of the major benefits is the ability to hear from other employees and their own ideas of innovation. Another benefit would be the morale of the organization being consistent within their Unwritten meetings. for the example of Google, the company is benefiting by receiving ideas that upper management may not have thought of for innovation while the employees that are presenting these Innovations are benefiting by feeling heard by the organization they work for. which in turn benefits the company since people will want to work for them since they feel they are being seen and heard.
