What sort of liability, if any, should companies have with respect to their published code of ethics? Companies should have a lot of liability when it comes to their code of ethics. The code of ethics of a company provides the outline of said company’s values and it shows how employees act within. It is extremely important that companies abide by their code of ethics, and they should be held responsible if there are any violations.  There are different forms of liability, such as through the law, the company’s reputation or even financial consequences. Companies can face consequences if they partake in unethical practices that go against any laws for regulations that are in place. The reputation of a company can be damaged if the actions of said company go against their states code of ethics. Lastly, financial consequences can occur through lawsuits and fines. Should IT professionals be required to subscribe to a code of ethics, such as physicians do? Code of ethics are adopted by organizations to help members to understand the organization guidelines and to follow honesty, integrity, and decisions. I think IT professionals should be required to subscribe to a code of ethics. A code of ethics can help IT professionals to be confident since they are dealing with sensitive information and code of ethics helps them know how to handle this information. According to Melissa, “I believe it is our responsibility as IT professionals to act in an ethical manner in the performance of our work duties. To inadvertently do otherwise risks losing the trust of our students, faculty, staff, communities, and the general public”. The code of ethics specifies IT professionals to respect the privacy of individuals. The
Code of ethics helps IT professionals to understand a series of rules that the way professionals act toward people.   It is designed to ensure that professionals act in the best interests of their clients and the public .The goal of the code is to identify and find answers about the moral basis of individual actions and follow the policy of the organizations.   What should be in the IT code of ethics? There are several codes of ethics in IT that should be followed at all times. ·       Professionalism- Any individual who works for an IT company should maintain a level of professionalism. They must always be honest with whoever they meet, and they must have a great level of integrity with co-workers and the public. ·       Confidentiality- When working with an IT company, it is common for employees to come across sensitive information. They must protect that information and not discuss it with anyone who is not authorized to have such information. ·       Security- The security in any IT company should always be looked after. Anytime any alerts come up, regarding breaches of security, they should be getting resolved as soon as possible, before they cause any sort of damage. ·       Privacy- Employees should always respect others' privacy, whether that’s their co-workers or the public. Individuals should always follow the privacy regulations set by the company they work for as well.
·       Professional Development- Technology is the one thing that has been evolving more and more over time. It is important for everyone who works in this industry to stay up to date with the newest technology that is available.  Should the IT code be the same for all countries? The global standardization of the IT code of ethics is debatable, with valid arguments on both sides. A pro for global standardization is that privacy, data protection, and non-discrimination are universal ethical ideals. Cybersecurity, AI ethics, and data governance affect the world, a universal approach can better handle these difficulties and assure global ethical standards. An international code of ethics can facilitate international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and understanding of the IT industry's ethical responsibilities. On the other hand, countries may have legal frameworks and regulations which are incompatible with global IT standards. As cultural and societal norms vary from country to country, influencing ethical perspectives, a global IT code may not accord with local values and legal systems. Sources
