2 Evaluating a Collaborative Meeting Effective Collaboration Throughout the meeting of the student success team (SST), every member presented themselves and explained the function that they would play throughout the meeting. They took turns talking about the areas in which the student excelled and where they could improve. Every member of the group discussed how they would contribute to the implementation of the plan to provide the student a leadership position in the classroom to maintain his level of engagement with the subjects that they were teaching. To assure the success of the pupils, every member did a good job of communicating, listening, and working together with the parents. Individually, they demonstrated respect for one another by attentively listening to one another and being prepared to do whatever it takes to assist the learner. Challenges and Solutions During collaborative efforts, it is possible that certain individuals may exhibit a lack of receptiveness towards others' ideas or possess little knowledge regarding the subject matter. Regarding the SST meeting concerning Jonah, it is possible that his father did not fully grasp the teachers' portrayal of his son. He had the potential to become defensive upon receiving the information that his son was engaging in bullying behavior and using bad language at school. The team members acted appropriately by initiating the discussion with favorable information regarding Jonah. This demonstrates to the parent that you acknowledge both the positive aspects of their child and the negative conduct they have displayed. It conveys the message that you acknowledge their child's individuality and recognize that even well-intentioned individuals can err and require further support to regain their footing. An alternative possibility is that the
3 History teacher lacked the knowledge or skills to modify his teaching methods to provide Jonah with an opportunity to assume a leadership position. His reluctance to modify the way his classroom is managed may have sprung from this problem. An effective approach to address this scenario would involve the administration demonstrating a willingness to engage in a collaborative discussion with the instructor. Together, they may review the teacher's lesson plans and strategize on how to reorganize the curriculum to accommodate Jonah's leadership responsibilities. Individuals often encounter challenges when attempting to implement modifications in areas they perceive as already flawless. Always demonstrate a willingness to collaborate and aid when it is required. Avoid merely stating the necessity for change and if everyone would automatically know how to enact it. Problem-Solving Strategies When you are working with a diverse group of people, it is unavoidable that you may experience difficulties. Everyone has their own set of beliefs regarding the proper way to carry out certain tasks. In this situation, the ability to solve problems will be required to be utilized. It is possible for special educators to be of assistance by ensuring that every member is well- prepared for the meeting and that they have access to all of the relevant material. It is imperative that prior to the commencement of the meeting, the parent or guardian be aware of their rights and the expectations placed upon them. Additionally, the special educator should ensure that other team members communicate any concerns they have about the student. By engaging in prior communication with the parent/guardian, they can address these issues beforehand, ensuring that the meeting does not serve as their first exposure to information on their child. This will provide the parent/guardian and the special educator with an opportunity to contemplate the child's situation and arrive at the meeting equipped with prepared solutions, as well as any

4 questions or concerns they may have. The key to a successful meeting is to ensure that all participants are well prepared and fully aware of their respective roles and responsibilities throughout the meeting. Equity and Respect To promote equity and respect in meetings, it is crucial to eliminate any personal biases before entering the discussion. It is imperative to prevent personal attitudes or beliefs from impeding the pursuit of the student's best interests. To further include equality and respect in meetings, it is important to consider the unique life circumstances of each member. It is crucial to acknowledge that not everyone has experienced or is now facing the same challenges. The effectiveness of a certain approach may vary amongst families. Each of us originates from diverse backgrounds and has encountered distinct life situations. These circumstances should be given careful consideration while engaging with families. By comprehending the unique circumstances of each family, you will be equipped to offer the necessary solutions that these families are seeking to facilitate their child's academic achievement. The ultimate objective is to inquire, "What course of action would be most advantageous for the student?"
