628 Week 6 Discussion Life can be very complex at times. You never know what challenges life will throw at you or what you may experience because of these challenges. These challenges can happen on a personal or more complex level. I love the example that Dinovi was able to utilize concerning the pandemic. This was a time when many individuals were facing crises on very different levels. From companies trying to stay afloat, families trying to stay safe, and individuals trying to find what their next steps will be. The five laws did a great job of guiding Dinovi to success during this trial of the pandemic. Likewise, there are many ways that I can apply the five laws in my own personal life. They can help me to face challenges in a more prepared and productive way. Using a personal example of graduating during a pandemic I was able to unknowingly utilize some of these laws to succeed. Pinpointing. I was able to pinpoint the struggles I was going to have with online learning at the very beginning. I knew my weaknesses and I was able to pinpoint two that would be critical for me to work on in order to succeed. This included procrastination and staying motivated. Goalsetting. I was able to set goals that were realistic for me. I am someone who struggles with procrastination and staying motivated during difficult situations. Because of this, when classes were moved online, I knew I had to set goals to be present, on time, and goals for my own motivation. This helped me to succeed even when classes were moved online, and I was learning in environments that were not ideal. Self-monitoring and reporting progress. Once I was able to create goals, I was able to self- monitor and report progress to both my professors and myself. Self-monitoring came as I created checklists for myself for assignments and agendas. Reporting progress came through completing assignments such as reviews and quizzes. Reciprocal feedback. This was very important during the online portion of my classes as my professors would often ask what they could do to improve their online course and give us surveys. We could give them the feedback that they needed, and they could give us feedback on some of our strengths and weaknesses at this time. Pay for performance. This was another important factor during online learning especially for me as I struggled to stay motivated at this time. Many of my professors would try to lighten the mood and give extra points for little things like turning on our cameras or showing our pets. Even though it sounds silly these actions allowed me to remain motivated and continue to show up for my classes. As stated by Dinovi, “the greatest leaders in history… have been able to influence people to go above and beyond by helping them find meaning in their day- to-day tasks. In other words, they fostered intrinsic motivation ( DiNovi & Gavoni, 2021, p. 233)” and that is what they did for me at that time. These laws can help with self-care and well-being through self-monitoring and goal setting. We can utilize these to set ourselves up to succeed in a very challenging and complex world. We can make goals for our own self-care needs and monitor these goals through self-checks
and “systematically observe… [our] behavior and record the occurrence (Cooper et. al, 2020)” When we do this we can care for ourselves more consistently and avoid burnout. References: Cooper, J.
