628 Week 2 Discussion: Involving learners in goal setting is a very powerful tool for success for a number of reasons. According to DiNovi and Gavoni (2020) one of these reasons includes the buy in and support of those carrying out the goal. This is because it creates an agreement that a change is needed and that they are willing to work together to see it happen (DiNovi & Gavoni, 2021, p. 107).” That being said, another reason this can be a powerful tool is because when people have the freedom to decide how the goal is reached it can only add to their willingness and motivation. When they are able to choose their actions, involvement, and engagement within goal setting, people are more motivated and perform better to reach them. This is known as “participatory management (DiNovi & Gavoni, 2021, p. 107) ” and it can be used across many different settings. According to Cooper, a Discriminative stimulus is “a stimulus in the presence of which responses of some type have been reinforced and in the absence of which the same type of responses have occurred and not been reinforced (Cooper et.al, 2020).” Setting a goal serves as an SD for my own behavior as it creates an ability for me to receive reinforcement. By setting the goal I know it is available, and I am seeking to change my behavior in order to reach it. An example from my own life can be seen through SAFMEDS. I set a goal to achieve a specific accel number by the end of the week and daily study goals. I will also outline reinforcement for reaching these goals, which sets up an opportunity for me to earn reinforcement. The goals signal the availability, and I change my daily behaviors to reach the goals and earn reinforcement. References: Cooper, J. O., Heron, T. E., & Heward, W. L. (2020). Applied Behavior Analysis (3rd ed.). Pearson Education Limited. DiNovi, B. & Gavoni, P. (2021).  The 5 Scientific Laws of Life & Leadership . Lanham: Cranberry Press. the following definition is given about what components make up goal setting: “Specifying a performance quality and/or level to be obtained, often by a particular time (Mayer, Sulzer- Azaroff, Wallace 2019).”
