Question 1: Why shouldn't a company strive to excel in all nine competitive priorities? It would not be wise for a company to attempt to excel in all nine competitive priorities because it is nearly impossible to do. Instead, a company should focus on the areas that are most important to their business model. Management selects the priorities that are the most important and assigns the selected competitive priorities to each process that are consistent with the needs of the external and the internal customers (Krajewski & Malhotra, 2022). By focusing on a select set of these priorities, the company can focus its efforts and enhance their competitive advantage without the risk of overstretching their resources. If a company focuses on excelling in all nine priorities, they risk becoming mediocre in some areas instead of excelling in the ones that are most important to their business. Question 2: What factors impact a company's choice of competitive priorities? A company should select competitive priorities based off the ones that are most important to their business model. This means the company should take into consideration the factors that relate to their business plan, their customers, their industry, and the existing resources of the company. The managers are tasked with interpreting and implementing the organizations’ strategic intent and convert competitive priorities into capabilities that achieve performance targets (McCardle, Rousseau & Krumwiede, 2021). Since not all priorities will be equally focused on, companies need to carefully evaluate which factors align with their business plan, their long-term goals, as well as which priorities align with their strengths. By carefully selecting the right priorities, a company can set themselves up for success. References Krajewski, L. J., Ritzman, L. P., & Malhotra, M. K. (2022).
