Kai Thng. 10-8-2023 Loving Monday by John D. Beckett Part 3 1. When God blesses you in business of life, I think it is a great practice to give something back to honor God and bless others. Beckett’s initiative to make sure to not only take care of his employees, but to also support a number of organizations that will make a difference in the community. Honoring God by helping others is a great way to show that we acknowledge that the resources we have been blessed with ultimately belong to the Lord and are not just ours to hoard. 2. I think that Beckett’s company decision to make stewardship a part of their Corporate Roadmap is essential and admirable. Many times, Christians tend to separate their work lives into two distinct spheres. By incorporating stewardship into his business model, Beckett is making sure that God is a part of all he does not just his private life. This is great because in this way his business can be a way to glorify God, not just another company considered with churning out profit. 3. I love the idea that stewardship is something that should not just be applied to his money. When stewardship is considered, Beckett is quick to point out that money should be what is considered the “least” when it comes to being faithful with what we have. Instead, Beckett expands the idea of stewardship to less considered aspects such as our employees, influence, time, and many other aspects. 4. When it comes to jobs, many people, unfortunately, pursue their careers at the cost of time with their wives and kids. This is wrong and detrimental to the wholeness of a person’s life. Beckett makes the case that family must be considered a foundational sphere as God has sanctioned three key institutions, which are family, church, and
Kai Thng. 10-8-2023 government. Work is important, but God established families as a unit to teach people about love and peace in this world. 5. Beckett points out three key ideas that should be implemented when it comes to family. First, family should be acknowledged as foundational, family should be prioritized over work, and finally time with family should be maximized. In regard to the first one, families are a place that people first learn about love and are a key place that many people are first introduced to the Gospel and learn about basic morals or wisdom. Next as important as work may seem, it should only be seen as a means to an end, and never the end itself. Finally, family time should be maximized so that kids and adults can form strong bonds knowing that they are loved, appreciated, and wanted. This is a great reminder that one day when I have a family, I must prioritize family over work because family is a place to nurture and raise those I love, with work as a way to serve this need. 6. Prayer is something that people often only turn to when something goes wrong. This is not a great understanding of prayer because it reduces God to someone who is simply there just to bail us out when we need help or simply give us what we want. Rather, we should pray as a way of getting to know God better and deepen our relationship with Him.When we pray, we invite God into our lives in order to understand His will for our lives and also learn to trust Him more. 7. Knowing the destination of where you are going is the first step to actually going somewhere. When Christians make decisions in life, it is important to have a vision that will help them follow in the way that God leads them. Without a vision for the future, it can be easy to run after what seems like the easiest way to make money even at the cost of doing things unmorally or unethically. When one has a vision, one can next think about
Kai Thng. 10-8-2023 the values one holds to implement along the journey. This way one can have a goal and also the tools to achieve it the right way. 8. Today, many promising businesses have ended up up floundering due to either unethical decisions or unclear goals. One of the major reasons for this is that profit as the vision for a company is not enough for a company to exist. Another is that simply having visions and values is meaningless is not enough if the leaders of the company itself don’t follow it. In order for a company to truly thrive than, a company must have a clear vision and values that its leaders hold fast too. As a leader, I must be careful to emulate the values that I want my company itself to have. 9. When God gives people a vision, it requires trust and faith for them to be able to follow it. Many times, these visions can seem impossible like in the case of Abraham being told he would be the father of many nations, Nehemiah being told that he would rebuild Jerusalem, or Moses being told that he would lead the Israelites our of Egypt. When God gives me a vision, I want to be able to step out confidently in faith to follow him wherever he may lead him so that I may be taken to places I never thought I could reach. 10. Values are now seen today as something that is subjective to each person’s own opinion. In a world that has lost its sense of right and wrong, it is important to know what you believe and to stand firm on these values. One value that I want to be known for in business that Beckett mentioned is integrity. I feel like integrity has been lost in today’s world as people will do anything to advance their careers even if it means putting others down and twisting the truth to get there. Instead, I want to follow the example of Joseph who had integrity so that I can seek God’s approval and not the approval of man..
