Advantages of Employee Focus Group Discussions A traditional focus group is a moderated group interview typically facilitated by business owners interested in learning about customer perceptions of their product or service. Employee focus group discussions follow the same protocol, with the discussion centered on employees' attitudes toward their employer. Conducting this type of exercise can give company managers better insight into what their employees like and dislike about the company. This approach gives employers the advantage of better understanding the attitude of employees, which can help in future employee recruitment and retention efforts. Perceptions Open-ended focus group discussion questions that center on how employees view the company can shed light on employee perceptions. For example, asking employees to elaborate on how they view the company's salary and benefits structure, workplace environment, attitude of managers and commitment to employee well-being will help a group moderator draw conclusions about overall employee perceptions about the company. This approach gives employers the advantage of being able to tune in to the specific needs of employees. Proactively addressing these needs in the future can lead to a more satisfied and productive workforce. Morale Focus group discussion questions that delve into the feelings of employees can help a moderator ascertain the level of contentment and happiness of workers. For example, open-ended questions that ask employees to talk

about workplace stressors, the frequency of conflict and whether they feel valued can help employers understand the morale levels of their workers. Employers gain a strategic advantage when they are able to proactively identify and address issues to employee morale. Satisfaction Many employees are motivated by challenging work opportunities. Focus group questions that invite employees to share thoughts on how challenged they feel by their positions and workloads will give management an idea of whether they are over or underestimating the skills and abilities of employees. Employers who understand the type of work their employees are interested in and capable of handling have the opportunity to evaluate job responsibilities and departmental goals. The advantage gained by this exercise is that employers can more accurately assign projects based on interest and ability, which can result in greater productivity and more satisfied employees. Thoughts on Improvements Employees who may be reluctant to express ideas for change or improvement in the company may be more willing to openly discuss ideas in an employee focus group discussion. This presents an opportunity for management to invite employees to share thoughts about new products, services or target markets as well as offer ideas for improving work flow and productivity. The advantage of taking this approach is that employers gain a new perspective on company operations and can act accordingly on their findings in future strategic planning efforts. Approaches

A successful employee focus group discussion is one that gives employees full freedom to openly and honestly discuss their feelings about the company they work for. Sessions that are moderated by an independent, neutral party who is not affiliated with the company can serve as an impartial observer. The advantage to this approach is that employees will feel more comfortable about expressing their opinions and the employers will receive an unbiased view of how their employees think. Specific lines of questioning can be used to help employers target particular areas of interest or concern. The advantage is that the company gets valuable feedback it can use to make meaningful and even profitable changes in the workplace. For example, if a company is interested in measuring how employees feel about salaries, questions should be focused on existing pay structure, the perceived monetary value of benefits and opportunities for reviews, raises and advancement.
