Start and end dates of research20 Aug 2022 - 20 Aug 2023 Proposed activity – aims, objectives, research question(s), and state how it is novel Project summary: COVID-19 has imposed significant detrimental effects on the global hospitality sector. These effects have primarily been considered from the socio-economic perspective, ignoring the implications of the pandemic for the environmental performance of hospitality services. United Kingdom after the Big Ban and Buckingham Palace well knows as a multinational culture of country, where each nationality can find minim 2 restaurants. The objectives of this research is to understand the current situation and thus have an even clearer idea of how we can face and solve part of the problems that afflict us as a society due to the unexpected situations, high and monthly changing inflation and possibly have an idea of how we could face a similar situation in the future. On March 2020 still to May 2021 the UK government to reduce the spread of Covid 19 closed all the restaurants, hotels and unnecessary traveling. National lockdowns were subsequently introduced (Hall et al. 2020) putting hospitality operations on a complete standstill. Except for hospitality businesses specializing in food takeaway and delivery, the hospitality sector ceased to temporarily exist as such. Knowing the peoples and owners, who working on this sector still need to pay bills, taxes and pay personals needs the government offering financial help, for all the UK businesses they pay totally 129bn pound and for self employers give totally 53bn pound. Why was effected and how the hospitality sector if they received help? Hit first and hit hardest by corona virus, the sector has racked-up £114.8bn sales lost versus what was expected for 2020/21. With full 24-months of data
available, hospitality, which in normal times generates up to £140bn-a-year, has lost 43% and 45 full weeks of sales since March 2020.The implications of the forced lockdown for the hospitality sector were manifold and, largely, detrimental. Forced business closures prompted hospitality providers to furlough their staff or make them redundant (Larue 2020). The preventative and protective measures against COVID-19 had eradicated the determinants of effective hospitality operations, i.e. instant flows of cash and hardworking employees, highlighting a bleak post-pandemic future for the sector (Filimonau et al. 2020a). Some restaurants, whose owners have some, saving to don’t lost costumers on that period starting offering food delivery and working with less staff member. What other challenge they need to face after finally opened? When the government left them open slowly, with high health and safety measure and limited costumers. It is expected that anti-COVID-19 protective measures will remain in place for some time (BBC 2020b) which does not facilitate business confidence in rapid financial recovery. Consumer demand for hospitality services will not reinstate immediately in a post-pandemic future due to health and safety precautions among customers (Gursoy et al. 2020). Although the rebound effect in consumption of hospitality services is possible (Jingjing 2020), there has been limited evidence of its occurrence to date. Another big problem was, they struggling to find employees, not just because they pay the minimum wage, but the workers didn’t fill safe again working with too many people. Why they find very hard employees, when lock down is finish? The answer is very simple; because 85% of workers from this sector are low educated and is EU workers. EU workers, whose working with agency before this 20% find other jobs on retail section and 65% turned back on their own country and they can’t turn back on UK. Knowing UK is no more in EU and no more free moving for EU workers; all EU workers need to have settle status or pre settle status, people who have just pre settle status and stay more than 6 months in another country they lost their status. There is any other reason for les profit? Yes, another reason is the cooking sunflower oil price after the Covid 19 is double, knowing this 2 country supply much the word’s sunflower oil,(50% coming from Ukraine and 25% from Russia). With this price increase on the end of this year each second small fish and chip, chicken and chips shop will be forced to close their shops and leaving more unemployed people. What suggestion can be good for this sector to don’t lost more profit? First suggestion can be to change the sunflower oil and try to use palm, coconut or rape oil. Another suggestion for restaurants, which struggling to find employees are to try or continuing with food delivery, because they can get more customers, more profit, with less employees. People going back to work, no more lock down, but they are still prefer to order online food and stay at home with their family.
