The Good Guys is a chain of consumer electronics retail stores in Australia and formerly New
Zealand. Its national headquarters is in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon Fields. Ian Muir founded
the company and following his death in 2009 ownership of the chain remained with the Muir family. In
2016, The Good Guys were purchased by JB Hi-Fi, despite competition concerns. When the first The Good Guys store (known at the time as Ian Muir’s Radio and Electrical Centre)
opened in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in 1952 by the Muir family, the company’s philosophy was to
delight customers and ‘do good’.Careful small acquisitions over the years provided the business with
a strong foundation. Still, it was re-naming to The Good Guys in 1998, supported by the unique selling
proposition Pay Less Pay Cash and the now-iconic TV commercial, which prepared the company for
national expansion. This customer-centric approach is also reflected in the company's ongoing
commitment to support and strengthen the communities in which it operates, and it's Doing Good
program which supports 14 charities across Australia through Workplace Giving, awareness
campaigns and fundraising efforts.

Since its humble beginnings in 1953, The Good Guys has been passionate about delighting customers and Doing Good. Our Doing Good activities and partnerships aim to address critical social issues while supporting the development of the local communities in which we operate. And, because we are Good Guys, we are also always trying to find ways of assisting those Aussies who just need a hand. One of those ways now includes an Employee Workplace Giving Program that allows our team members to donate to 12 charity partners. The Good Guys Doing Good Workplace Giving program started in July 2017, and every dollar donated by our team members is matched by The Good Guys, doubling the positive impact on the charities we support and the community. In 2010, The Good Guys established The Good Foundation and in partnership with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and the Queensland state government funded the establishment of the first Australian Ministry of Food Centre in Ipswich, west of Brisbane. The Foundation aims to encourage and support programs and initiatives that have the potential to improve the health and social welfare of communities across Australia.
Current Sustainability Practices

The Good Guys has a strong commitment to sustainability, especially product stewardship, offering customers a free third-party collection service for old whitegoods. In 2016, The Good Guys partnered with the NSW Government ( and hoping to work with other states as well). To launch an appliance replacement initiative that helps nearly 20,000 low-income households in NSW cut the cost of their energy bills, by offering those discounts on energy-efficient refrigerators and televisions. The Home Energy Action Appliance Program provides financial support through a 40 per cent subsidy for fridges and a 50 per cent subsidy for TVs. earners save approximately $2.8 million a year.Last year, The Good Guys became the program's delivery partner. They are responsible for managing all public enquiries, assessing customer suitability/eligibility, assisting customers with the application process, referring discretionary customers to engagement partners. For assessment and managing the sale, delivery and installation of new products as well as the removal of old products."When we first heard about the NSW Government's plans for a Home Energy Action Appliance Program, to assist low-income households through an appliance replacement incentive. We knew it was something that The Good Guys needed to get involved with," said Michael Ford, The Good Guys CEO. "We take corporate social responsibility and sustainability very seriously, and this program fittingly covers both areas," Ford said.

CONTEXT & SCENARIO
The Good Guys electrical retail stores in your state (choose one from NSW, QLD, or WA) have been
operating since 2002. The stores are bulky goods warehouse-style store, selling white goods,
electronics, and home appliances. There are 20 stores in your state that you have selected for this
sustainability initiative. Majority of the stores are about 2400 square metres and requires an overall
internal reconfiguration of its energy usage to reduce consumption and its carbon footprint. Your state
is renowned for high, dry temperatures in summer and freezing days in winter. You have recently joined the simulated organisation (or the organisation of your choice that will take
the new sustainability initiatives as part of corporate vision) as the “Environmental Change Manager”,
who will prepare the business case for the need for these new initiatives within the organisation. Once
the sustainability policy and relevant procedures developed, you will then communicate, implement,
and review the sustainability policy project. You will be progressively completing tasks one after
another within the simulated environment (or your preferred organisation going through change) to
complete this assessment task.
What change and what is required?
Currently, the simulated workplace “The Good Guys (or the organisation of your choice) is planning to
take on sustainable initiatives as part of the 2030 vision of the organisation. The objective is to reduce
carbon footprints created by the organisation and its employees. As more retailers are taking e-
policies and environmentally sound practices, your workplace felt the need to be at the forefront of
sustainable policies and procedures.
Your operational director has mentioned to you that some funds have available for this project and
your primary job is to develop, communicate, implement, and review the sustainability policy of the
organisation on a step-by-step basis. To do this, you are to focus on all stores of a specific state
(choose one from NSW, QLD, or WA) to implement this policy. You are to address the internal energy
consumption of the state’s retail stores along with its energy-efficient appliances, including office
energy use, office supplies, purchasing and cleaning. Since this is the first initiative of its kind for the
organisation, it is crucial to conduct initial research to find out the existing scenario of energy
consumption and resource use of the stores. The new approach of the company emphasises on its
vision that economic prosperity should not come at the cost of the destruction of natural and human
resources.
You will particularly:
scope and develop organisational policies and procedures that comply with legislative
requirements and support the organisation’s sustainability goals covering at a minimum such
as minimising resource use, resource efficiency, reducing toxic material and hazardous
chemical use, employing life cycle management approaches and continuous improvement

plan and implement sustainability policy and procedures including agreed outcomes,
performance indicators, activities to be undertaken, assigned responsibilities, record keeping,
review and improvement processes
consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate engagement with
sustainability policy development, implementation, and continuous improvement
review and improve sustainability policies
To develop and implement sustainability policy and practices, you will need to refer to your state authorities. The state and territory government departments dealing with environmental legislation and

TASK 1: DEVELOP AND REPORT WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
Sustainability is beneficial to the workplace and the environment and your workplace needs a sound sustainability policy. In this Task you are required to develop and report the sustainability policy for your chosen workplace or the simulated workplace (The Good Guys). You will develop the policy with several step-by-step tasks following sequentially.
Task 1.1 Conduct initial research for policy development (9 marks, 3 marks for each)
Conduct an initial research and collect information (from at least three sources to be provided in the Appendix Reference List), on the following issues: a)
Overview of organisation and the requirement for sustainability
b)
Define scope of sustainability policy for your workplace by identifying the various environmental problems of the organisation in terms of resource use (electricity, water, air, food wastage, fossil fuel etc), use of toxic material, hazardous chemical use, waste management, biological impacts and environmental emergencies and response. Identify at least eight problems. c)
Stakeholders involved (internal and external) with the development of the policy. Consultation with stakeholders (to be completed in PART B).
CONDUCT AN INITIAL RESEARCH FOR POLICY DEVELOPMENT
Overview of organisation and the requirement for sustainability
The Good Guys, an Australian consumer electronics retail business, was founded by Ian Muir and has
remained under the control of the Muir family even after Ian's passing in 2009. In 2016, The Good Guys was acquired by JB Hi-Fi. As a company, we have already taken some sustainability measures, such as implementing a free collection program for recycling old products and achieving a 30% reduction in energy use in select stores. These efforts have resulted in significant cost savings for the
company. However, we recognize that there is much more work to be done, and we have set forth an ambitious plan to manage and enhance sustainability practices.
Our vision is to integrate the new sustainability program into the company's long-term strategy over the next decade. We are dedicated to employing various strategies and tools to reduce both the organization's and its employees' carbon footprint. By doing so, we aim to contribute to a better environment. Additionally, we seek to encourage the communities where our stores are located to participate in similar initiatives, fostering a collective effort for environmental improvement.
Define scope of sustainability policyand its applications for your workplace
The Good Guys is dedicated to reducing the carbon footprints of the organization and its employees,
making their sustainability policy all-encompassing in terms of purpose and responsibilities. Our objective is to ensure that every individual, including employees, managers, stakeholders, and the community, actively embraces and prioritizes sustainability.
Extensive training programs have been implemented for employees and managers within the company. Over the past 12 months, our employees have received comprehensive training to provide
expert advice to customers on selecting energy and water efficient appliances. By equipping our employees with this knowledge, we empower them to guide customers towards more sustainable choices.
Simultaneously, our management team has undergone specialized training to effectively implement the new sustainability strategy. They are at the forefront of driving environmental protection initiatives, acting as pioneers within the organization.

a)
State the purpose of the policy explaining its context and why it is required b)
State the policy objectives, as quantifiable measurements outlining what the policy should accomplish for each objective c)
Explain how the developed policy and the strategies reflect the organization’s commitment to sustainability and as a business opportunity. PURPOSE, OBJECTIVES, AND STRATEGIES OF THE POLICY
State the purpose of the policy Our objective is to ensure that our goods and services not only meet established environmental standards but also actively contribute to safeguarding and conserving the environment. To achieve this, we have developed a comprehensive sustainability policy that serves as a guiding framework for our actions.
One of our primary goals is to foster and solidify a sustainability culture among our clients, colleagues,
and suppliers. By raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to inspire and empower others to join us in our environmental efforts. Together, we can make a significant impact on
the well-being of our planet.
Environmental sustainability is a core value embedded in our long-term vision. We understand that it is an ongoing and continuous process that requires consistent dedication. Our approach revolves around maximizing resource efficiency throughout all aspects of our operations. By doing so, we strive
to minimize environmental impacts, reduce waste generation, and optimize the use of natural resources.
Through the integration of our sustainability policy, we aim to align our business practices with the principles of environmental responsibility. By adhering to existing environmental standards, we demonstrate our commitment to sustainable operations. We also seek to encourage innovation and explore new opportunities to further enhance our environmental performance.
By actively embracing environmental sustainability and promoting a culture of sustainability within our organization and beyond, we can collectively work towards a better future, where our actions positively contribute to the preservation of the environment for generations to come.
State the policy objectives, as quantifiable measurements Quantitative goals play a crucial role at The Good Guys as they enable us to track the cost savings and productivity enhancements resulting from our sustainability policies. We have established the following measurable indicators:
Energy-saving initiative: By the end of 2023, our aim is to achieve a 45% reduction in energy consumption, leading to estimated cost savings of $25,000.
Low-energy equipment in low-income homes: We strive to provide low-energy equipment to
30,000 households within the next year, contributing to energy efficiency and affordability for those in need.
Carbon footprint reduction: Our goal is to reduce the carbon impact across all our stores by 10% in the upcoming year, demonstrating our commitment to mitigating climate change.
Water conservation and paper reduction: We target a 25% decrease in water usage over the next year, alongside a 35% reduction in the number of printed materials, aligning our operations with sustainable resource management.
Sustainability, Assessment No.1 v1 Last updated on 06/04/2022 by MM Page 14
T-1.8.1_v3
Recycling rate increase: Over the next six months, we aim to raise the recycling rate by 15%, further promoting responsible waste management and the circular economy.
By establishing these specific and measurable targets, we can effectively monitor our progress, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate achievements as we strive towards a more sustainable future. These quantitative goals enable us to tangibly measure the positive impact of our
sustainability initiatives and continually enhance our environmental performance.
How will the developed policy and the strategies reflect the organization’s commitment to sustainability?
At The Good Guys, our sustainability policies serve as a powerful manifestation of our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, employee well-being, and community engagement. These
policies have been thoughtfully designed to encompass a wide range of initiatives that address our core values and aspirations.
Recycling is an integral part of our operations, ensuring the proper disposal and repurposing of materials to minimize waste. We also prioritize energy conservation through the implementation of energy-efficient technologies and practices across our facilities.
Furthermore, we recognize the significance of empowering our staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively contribute to our sustainability goals. Through regular training programs, we equip our employees to champion sustainable practices, fostering a collective sense of responsibility and ensuring our sustainability initiatives are ingrained in the fabric of our organization.
By consistently adhering to and enhancing our sustainability policies, we aspire to be a leader in environmental care. We firmly believe that our commitment to sustainability not only benefits the environment but also positively impacts our employees and the communities we serve. Through collective efforts, we strive to create a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

January 2023 PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE POLICY
Describe in detail, how the strategies (mentioned above) that can be implemented to ensure resource efficiency within the office. Who is responsible for carrying out these activities?
Implementing new strategies requires a gradual and intentional approach. To ensure successful implementation, it is crucial to provide comprehensive training to employees and managers, ensuring a shared understanding of sustainability principles. Additionally, engaging the entire organization, stakeholders, and the community is essential to effectively execute the sustainability plan and establish clear objectives.
Sustaining these policies and achieving long-term impact necessitates collective effort. Therefore, we will adopt the following sustainable practices:
Minimize printing by transitioning to digital document submission and storage, reducing paper consumption.
Utilize catalogues and email invoicing for plant sales, promoting paperless transactions.
Replace conventional light bulbs with energy-efficient alternatives in all business locations, while providing environmentally friendly cleaning supplies to cleaning personnel.
Replace current store paints with environmentally friendly options and incentivize the use of rechargeable batteries, reducing hazardous waste.

Decrease the usage of petroleum products in stores by offering convenient battery collection services for customers at no cost.
It is evident that sustainable development requires the commitment and collaboration of all individuals involved. By working together, we can achieve a significant positive impact and create a more sustainable future.
Make recommendation on suitable performance indicators that can be used to measure the changing environmental performance Having the capability to accurately identify indicators is essential for making informed decisions and improving performance. To assess the success of our store strategy, we have identified several key indicators that will help us track progress:
Energy and water savings over the past six months: Measure the amount of electricity and water conserved during this period to gauge our efficiency improvements.
Utilization of green paints in New South Wales stores: Determine the percentage of stores within the region that have adopted environmentally friendly paint options.
Battery recycling rate in the previous six months: Calculate the percentage of batteries recycled during this period to assess our commitment to responsible waste management.
Shop recycling percentage: Evaluate the proportion of recyclable materials effectively recycled within our stores, highlighting our efforts to minimize waste.
Carbon footprint reduction percentage: Measure the percentage of decrease in our overall carbon footprint, indicating progress in mitigating our environmental impact.
Percentage of paper usage in retail establishments: Determine the extent to which paper consumption
has been reduced within our retail operations, reflecting our commitment to paper waste reduction.
By regularly monitoring and analyzing these indicators, we can gain valuable insights into our store strategy's effectiveness and identify areas for further improvement. These measurements provide a quantitative assessment of our sustainability performance and guide our efforts to create a more environmentally responsible business.
Explain why the improvement strategies recommended in the above question are suitable depending on Effectiveness (impact on usage), Cost efficiency and Timeframe to implement

TASK 3: IMPLEMENT WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
SCENARIO:
Now that you have promoted the workplace sustainability plan to the relevant stakeholders and office staff, the organisation has slowly begun to implement the actions. However, changes in the workplace under the new policy can be tough to get used to. To maintain the practices,
you need to develop a register for recording and tracking the continuous improvements in resource efficiency. You will also create two step-by-step procedures that relate to sustainability for your chosen workplace or the simulated organisation (The Good Guys). All methods should be communicated with the staff across the state to ensure awareness of the responsibilities each employee has towards fulfilling the actions. Task 3.1Develop TWO step-by-step procedures that relates to sustainability for your chosen workplace or the simulated organisation (The Good Guys). For example, you can choose any two fromthe following or think of something more innovative. (8 marks, 4 marks each)
e-waste (batteries, chargers, toners, mobiles, electronics, etc) recycling procedure,
procedure for general waste (paper, containers, glass, plastics, etc)
procedure for minimising energy waste(lights, TVs, air con, equipments, etc) during store operations and also closing,
procedure for reducing paper waste,
procedure for purchasing from sustainable sources for store operations
SUSTAINABILITY PROCEDURES
Sustainability Procedure Name: Step-by-step procedure and instructions:
At Good Guys, we will leverage current technology to reduce paper consumption by transitioning to email communication, electronic billing, and digital catalogues while practicing responsible printing methods.
We prioritize employee training to raise awareness about paper waste reduction and provide them with the necessary tools and strategies to minimize paper usage.
An email communication will be sent to our clients and suppliers to inform them about the new
changes and the shift to electronic invoicing, promoting transparency and encouraging their participation.
To minimize paper waste, we will install dispensers in the store's bathrooms that dispense an appropriate amount of paper to customers, ensuring efficient usage.
Emphasizing responsible printing practices, we will utilize recycled paper and encourage double-sided printing to optimize resource utilization.
During the initial week, we will conduct brief daily meetings to monitor the progress of the new
procedures, address any queries, and provide support. Following this, monthly meetings will be held to maintain continuous improvement.
One month later, a comprehensive meeting will be held to share the store's achievements and measures with all staff, fostering a sense of ownership and involvement. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels part of this significant process for the store and the environment.
Sustainability Procedure Name: Step-by-step procedure and instructions:
Conduct regular maintenance of the store's electrical systems to ensure optimal functionality and prevent energy wastage.
Provide energy-saving training to employees, raising awareness and equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to reduce energy consumption.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must complete Task 4 after completing your PART B (presentation and communication)
TASK 4: REVIEW WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY IMPLEMENTATION
time for a bi-annual review of the new plan. During your inspection, you have found the original plans have incurred both expected and unexpected results within the state stores/branches. Below is the breakdown of the outcomes of your sustainability policy in the last six months:
The behaviour the staff member towards paper use has decreased due to the increase in recycling and the use of digital media.
However, that has led to an increase in electricity consumption by 5% on electronic communication devices due to more use of mobile phones and emails.
Overall electricity costs have been down by 9%. However, you have also invested heavily in installing energy-efficient equipment and products in every store. You expect to reach the breakeven by the next six months.
Store managers have procured operational goods (e.g. paper, stationery, devices, tools) from sustainable suppliers, but this has increased operating costs by 8% in the last six months.
You have partnered with a third party (Airtasker) to provide some deliveries that include installation of goods at customer places. It has led to a reduction of fuel usage, installation hassle and employment of additional casual employees. However, this has also reduced the overall revenue by 2%.
Your implemented staff rewards for green initiatives (for stores/breaches) have led to some additional expenditure of $50,000 in the last six months. However, with these innovative green ideas and initiates suggested by team members have led to operational efficiency by 10% which means that you employed 4 hours of less labour in every store each week (4 hours x 20 stores = 80 hours per week). It has eventually led to a massive labour cost savings
of 1920 hours during the last six months. Based on the outcomes, it is time for you to review and report the ongoing monitoring of the implementation of the policy to the relevant stakeholders based on their previous feedback.
Task 4.1 Review, analyse and document the outcomes. Analyse the above six outcomes for your simulated workplace project (or find results from your chosen organisation). In this task you will summarise the results as reported to you by Operations Division. (6 marks)
DOCUMENT OUTCOMES OF SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
Summary of Semester Results:
Positive:
• Implementation of digital media has successfully reduced paper usage.
• Overall power costs have been reduced by 9%.
• Energy-efficient equipment and products have been installed in each store.
• Collaboration with sustainable suppliers has provided operational assets.
• Fuel utilization has been minimized through the partnership with AirTasker.
• Creative green ideas and activities proposed by team members have resulted in a 10% increase in operational efficiency.
• Significant labor cost reduction of 1920 hours has been achieved in the past six months.
Negative:
• Electricity usage has increased by 5% due to the growing reliance on mobile phones and emails.

• Temporary personnel had to be employed as a result of the partnership with AirTasker.
• Operating expenses have increased by 8% due to the relationship with sustainable suppliers.
• Revenue has decreased by 2% as a result of the partnership with AirTasker.
• Employee incentives introduced in the past six months have resulted in additional costs of $50,000.
This summary highlights the positive outcomes achieved through our revised plans, such as reduced paper usage, cost savings in power consumption, and the integration of energy-efficient equipment. Collaborations with sustainable suppliers have also provided operational advantages. However, there are areas that require attention and improvement, including the increased electricity usage attributed to mobile devices, the need for temporary personnel due to the partnership with AirTasker, and the higher operating expenses associated with sustainable suppliers. Although revenue has decreased and employee incentives have incurred additional costs, the overall progress towards sustainability goals is evident. By addressing these challenges and leveraging the positive results, we can continue to refine our strategies and drive further improvements in the next phase of our sustainability journey.

To: ALL STAKEHOLDERS AND MANAGEMENT
Dear Stakeholders,
I'm delighted to share, regarding sustainability, that due to the adoption of digital media, paper usage has declined by 9% and overall power expenses have decreased by 9%. We have also acquired energy-efficient equipment and items from sustainable sources. Thanks to the innovative ecological ideas and efforts put forth by our staff, we have achieved a 10% increase in operational efficiency, indicating the success of our strategy.
While there is room for improvement, I have confidence that we will make progress in the near future. For instance, electricity consumption has risen by 5% due to increased mobile phone and email usage. However, we are currently implementing the Disconnect Campaign, which encourages individuals to disconnect their cell phones and laptops once they are fully charged. This initiative was launched after discovering that these devices continued to charge even at 100% battery.
Another challenge we faced was the need to hire temporary employees as a result of our partnership with AirTasker. Additionally, our operating costs increased by 8% due to our collaboration with sustainable suppliers. Nevertheless, we are optimistic that in the long run, this partnership and the resulting savings will enable us to incorporate more organic products in our stores.
In terms of our policy and implementation regarding investigation, we have made progress in reducing
electricity, water, and paper consumption. However, we recognize the potential for further improvement. Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize paper recycling and reuse whenever possible, optimize the use of air conditioning by employing it only when necessary, and promote the practice of disconnecting cell phones and laptops once they are fully charged.
