It’s important to understand and consider all nine competitive priorities but attempting to focus efforts on all nine can have a negative impact on a company’s success. It’s like with anything in life, if you spread yourself too thin by focusing on too many things at once, its likely you won’t excel in any of them. It’s best to prioritize efforts with strategic focus to a select few that have the greatest impact on company success. For example, if a company’s business model is highly dependent on customer satisfaction, it would be in the best interest of the company to tailor their efforts to customer needs, resource allocation, and competitor analysis. This way they can guarantee to excel in providing the customer with what they want, when they want it, and maintain competitiveness. Additionally, by emphasizing the important factors that have bigger impact on success, the remaining competitive priorities are inadvertently better aligned as well. A company that I really love, and I think has done a great job of concentrating on their priorities and aligning them with their mission focus is, Bombas. Bombas uses a “people first” approach, highlighting the importance of treating employees well, giving back to less fortunate, and providing quality products and services. Without compromising its mission and focusing on its own unique market drivers like performance management, it continues to elevate the company and empower employees and customers alike to live their slogan of “Bee Better.” References: Krajewski, L.
