GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT 2 Global Supply Chain Management The present business world is fast-changing, with an increasing emphasis on technology. As business processes continue to evolve, supply chains should equally adapt to the changes to ensure sustained business performance. While searching online, I found the article “Four Compass Points for Global Supply Chain Management” on the Supply Chain Management Review website. In the article, Vyas (2018) acknowledges that the field of global logistics has never been dynamic like it is in the 21st century. While many developments have shaped supply chains over the years, the article identifies ominichannel, emerging forms of technology, an increase in global trade, and a continued shift to online marketplaces as the main trends that will determine the success of businesses over the next few years. In this light, the author calls on supply chain executives to determine how to maneuver through the challenges and trends since entities that capitalize on the identified models will secure an advantage in the market. Supply chain management material and recent research in the area indicate that the world of business is changing rapidly. Improvements in technology will lead to novel practices and methodologies in the sourcing for raw materials, warehousing, transportation, and the disposal of waste. The expectations of consumers regarding the quality of goods and services are also changing. People want to shop but do not want to visit physical stores. Such trends indicate that supply chains should customize technology to meet the needs of customers, or their respective firms could lose their share of the market (Vyas, 2018). In this light, business organizations must stay informed of the trends in the market and align their supply chain management practices. From my personal standpoint and understanding, the current article is very informative on supply chain management. The information in the article is not restricted to one nation but applies to all business entities. As technology develops, it will continue to guide business
GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT 3 patterns. Omnichannel, global trade, and online marketplaces are all aspects founded on or supported by emerging technologies. The evidence for changing trends in supply chains is already evident from the emergence of online companies, such as Alibaba, Amazon, and eBay, and the success of innovative businesses like Lyft and Airbnb. Moving forward, I think firms that integrate the trends discussed in the article will sustain performance or have a competitive edge.
