Researching a topic of professional interest is a great motivator in writing a dissertation. Reviewing trends in Business and Organization & Management is a good place to start when considering a modern topic of interest. For your main thread perform the following: Research the Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) for 2 articles that are of interest to you in a topic area of business based on your degree program. Read the articles and post in the discussion why this topic is of interest to you in your research. Consider the following in your discussion post as it relates to your selected articles: professional experience as it relates to the topic, current trends / problems associated with the topic, the impact of the topic on the organization or industry. Discussion Topic: The impact that transformational leadership has on remote employees and virtual teams. Introduction: In recent years, an important debate has developed over the comparison between virtual teams and onsite teams. The debate has intensified since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020. The question is whether virtual teams demonstrate comparable productivity levels as on-site teams and how transformational leadership affects the decision-making and overall progress of these teams. The transition from onsite to virtual work arrangements present both advantages and disadvantages. Research has shown that flexible work arrangements, including virtual teams, enhance employees’ well-being, instill better work-life balance, and heightened productivity as well as increase their sense of autonomy (Lundqvist et al., 2022)Links to an external site.. It can be argued that members of virtual teams may not experience the same impact of transformational leadership because they are forced to acquire additional skills like autonomy and self-leadership to manage their work. Some leaders argue that virtual teams are more at risk of being less productive due to their reliance on digital platforms and less on face-to-face interaction with their leaders (Lundqvist et al., 2022)Links to an external site.. Professional Experience and Challenges with Transformational Leadership in Virtual Teams: Firstly, let's define the concept of transformational leadership. It is described as “the influence of behaviors and attitudes of individuals, including the interaction within and between groups regarding goals and vision achievements” (Davidaviciene & Al Majzoub, 2022)Links to an external site.. With over a decade of experience in virtual team environments, I’ve observed that my team’s productivity has been the same or in many cases has exceeded that of the onsite teams I’ve worked with. Some leaders have had challenges with virtual team arrangements, finding that it restricts their ability to build strong relationships and trust. In addition, they have a difficult time handling conflicts effectively. With the absence of face-to-face interactions it is imperative that the leader possesses the right skills, particularly in areas like communication and motivation (Davidaviciene & Al Majzoub, 2022)Links to an external site.. The Impact of Transformational Leadership on Virtual Teams
Transformational leadership is a leadership style that relies heavily on motivating team members and enabling them to reach their full potential and achieve maximum performance, influencing them while also considering individual needs through intellectual stimulation of behavior (Davidaviciene & Al Majzoub, 2022)Links to an external site.. Transformational leaders build successful virtual teams using complementary skills and by capturing the best ideas from all team members when reaching a decision. The success of virtual teams can be influenced by four key behaviors of transformational leaders. Firstly, idealized influence involves the leader's behaviors being accepted. Secondly, intellectual stimulation which reflects the leader's ability to take a risk. Thirdly, inspirational motivation revolves around how team members perceive their leader’s mission and vision. Lastly, Individual consideration addresses whether the leader takes on a mentoring role. These four behaviors contribute to an enhanced decision-making process, ultimately increasing the chances of success of virtual teams both in their decision-making and overall effectiveness (Davidaviciene & Al Majzoub, 2022)Links to an external site.. Although this discussion does not directly cite specific biblical references there are biblical principles that can be related. For instance, the concept of transformational leadership aligns with certain biblical teachings. Leaders who inspire and motivate team members to reach their full potential can be related to qualities of those encouraged in the Bible. Additionally, the idea of considering the individual needs of the team members and providing intellectual stimulation can be considered Biblical alignment.
