One way sports leaders can encourage ethical behavior among their team is by promoting
sportsmanship. By using sportsmanship, healthy competition is considered a way of developing character, personal honor, and kindness. It creates competition while fostering trust and respect between opponents. The purpose of sportsmanship is to win and doing it in an honorable manner through honest effort. Other ways of encouraging ethical behavior among members include following established guidelines of the sport, thus creating a fair, competitive advantage that enables sports integrity. Also, encouraging athletes to be responsible for their performance and actions on and off the field can help maintain ethical behavior (Martens, 2012). This means teaching them how to deal with their emotions if they lose a game or encounter a serious situation off the field that might lead to severe impacts. Encouraging respect among those working within the sports organization towards each other, coaches and officials, and the opponent can help foster ethical behavior. This enables moral character towards society. Even though a player may appear mean on the field, this can be attributed to the winning mentality required. An example of a coach who urged players to play by the rules and maintain high personal
ethical standards is coach Ken Carter. He encouraged his players to do what was right, and this made him hit the national headlines when he prevented his team, which was undefeated, from attending training since 15 of the team members were scoring low marks in their classwork. He wanted to remind them that they were not exempted from attending classes since they marveled crowds and won various tournaments. Despite the team's success, Carter felt that they had failed in many aspects, like in their responsibilities in ensuring the student-athletes attended
