Alaska Native Language Preservation and Advisory Council
What does the ANLPAC do?
The Alaska Native Language Preservation & Advisory
Council provides recommendations and advice to
both the Governor and Legislature on programs,
policies, and projects. It also networks and advocates
in support of the Council’s mission.
Examine the Language Programs link on
the ANLPAC site. Note (3) three things
you noticed and (3) three things you
wondered.
3 things I noticed were that languages and
language programs have their own link, that it is
somewhat difficult to find the homepage of the
ANLPAC site, it is linked under State of Alaska,
Commerce, then Community & Regional Affairs,
and lastly I noticed is that I think the ANLPAC
website has not been updated since 2022. The last
things on ANLPAC have the 2022 Biennial Report
and summaries but nothing more recent than that.
3 things I wonder are if the ANLPAC have not
updated their website on purpose, I wonder why
ANLPAC does not truly have its own website such
as by its own URL and not with
commerce.alaska.gov, and lastly I wonder why the
languages and language programs sections are
separated and not together, when looking through
them I think they would be better to have
combined sections.

Examine the

site. Who are
the intended
audiences
and what are the
methods
for teaching language?
I think the intended audiences are the people of
Inupiaq. The website speaks a lot about teachers,
parents, and families in those communities. Their
methods for teaching language include a
phrasebook, quizlet form of the course, and a lot of
online curriculums. Although, the website still says
that inperson classes are still not currently being
offered.
Examine the
Doyon Languages Online
site. Who are the intended
audiences
for
their programs and what are the
methods
for teaching language?
The intended audience for their programs are the
people of the Doyon region. The website includes
increasing the number of people who speak
languages from Lower Tanana, Koyukon,
Tanacross, Upper Koskokwin, Gwich’in,
Holikachuk, and Upper Tanana. The methods for
teaching language are through online language-
learning lessons. They have Doyon Languages
Online for computers and an app for cellphones.
Describe the Anchorage Museum’s
approach to languages on their
Listen
site. What did you find the most
interesting?
The Anchorage Museum’s approach to languages
is including language lessons, podcasts, and
music to their website. They also include many
resources such as Alaska Native Language Center
and Youtbube. I find it the most interesting that
they include recordings of elders; stories. I thought
the website included a well rounded amount of
information.
Language Program Development in Schools and Districts
Examine the

program.
Why do they incorporate music into their
language program? Who are the
language learners (age/grade) in this
program?
The language learners in this program are
Kindergarteners and First Graders. Music is
incorporated into their language program because
of the sense that music is its own language. It
shows how much of the language is embedded in
culture.
Describe the three language programs
shared in

. Where are they
located and what is their approach to
teaching language?
The three language programs shared immersion
programs, dance, and community events. They are
located in Bethel, Alaska. Their approach to
teaching language is incorporating the community
and learning. Such as writing, reading, and
listening to elders. They also use music.
What are the components of the Yup’ik
Language Pipeline in the
Frontiers
episode? Which organizations are
involved in the design?
The components of the Yup’ik Language Pipeline
are immersions where children are both immersed
in the language and culture. The components of
the Yup’ik Language Pipeline include that children
must begin to learn languages to help progress
language. Without children then a language can
become extinct. The organizations that are
involved in the design are Cook Inlet Native Head
Start and Anchorage School District.
