Answer the questions below after completing the required readings
and lectures. It is important that you know about the sensitive period
of learning a second language.
1. At what age did you start learning a second language?
I started learning a second language as a high school sophomore. The
language I learned was Spanish. I took four years of Spanish courses and
would say I have a good understanding of basic concepts.
2. Have you had an immersion experience surrounded by native speakers
of the language? Explain. If you have not, what about being in an
environment where groups of people are speaking a language different
than your native language? Explain.
I had an immersion experience surrounded by native speakers over the
summer. My class was completely in Spanish and was very overwhelming.
It was very beneficial at the end of the day because I was able to
understand Spanish in conversation a lot better.
3. Learning a second language after the sensitive period for language
acquisition has ended is: the post-critical period language acquisition or
second language acquisition. It emphasized learning taking place after the
critical period.
4. Which aspects of the second language remain most challenging for you
– pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and/or social conversations? It can
be more than one. Explain why and give an example(s).
I think the biggest challenge for me is conversation. I think it is hard to keep
up a conversation and understand everything when talking to a native
Spanish speaker. Native speakers talk very fast and sometimes use words
I have never learned before. For example, when I visited Mexico over the
Summer, the hotel assistant was talking to me in Spanish, and I could
barely understand anything she was saying because she was using words I
had never learned before and was able to talk so fast and fluently to the
point where I gave up.
