Correcting Phonetic Transcription The following is a broad phonetic transcription of parts of the poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter” by Lewis Carroll. There is one major error in each line that is an impossible pronunciation for any American English speaker. The error may consist of an extra symbol, a missing symbol, or a wrong symbol in the word (none of the errors are about aspiration or nasalization of vowels). Re-write the word in which the error occurs using the correct phonetic transcription. E.g. “The time has come” ð ə ta ɪ m hæz c ʌ m Corrected: [c ʌ m] should be [k ʌ m] a. “the walrus said” ð w l ə ɔ ɹ s sed ə b. “to talk of many things” t ʊ t lk v m n θ ŋz ɔ ə ɛ ɪ ɪ c. “of shoes and ships” v uz and ps ə ʃ ʃɪ d. “and sealing wax” ænd sil ŋ w ɪ æx

This Milestone consists of three parts and you must complete all of them to receive full credit for Milestone 1. In Milestone 1A, you will provide demographic information about the language you have chosen as well as ethnographic information about your consultant. In Milestone 1B, your will play a series of audio files to your linguistic consultant, ask him/her what the word means in English, and type your consultant’s response (in English). In Milestone 1C, you will ask your consultant to say individual words in his or her language. Then you will provide a narrow transcription of the word using the IPA. If you are unable to recognize a specific sound, you can consult with the following webpages to see what each language's inventory is: Greek (Modern): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Greek_phonology Mandarin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Chinese_phonology Korean: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_phonology Polish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_phonology Urdu/Hindi: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustani_phonology Russian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_phonology
