Clinical Field Experience A: Language Focus Holly Stroud Grand Canyon Esl 546 December 6, 2023
Understanding Language: How do you address this? When interviewing the ELL instructor at Cleveland Middle School Mr. K she said she first evaluates her class and students in her classes addresses the function and tries to understand the roles language will play in her classroom for each child. She said the function of language in the classroom and the language in the classroom go hand in hand. She uses different types of visuals, actions, interaction, and student engagement when teaching her students. The language function is how language will be used in the movement and functionality of the room. I observed how she uses both languages and functions when explaining things to her 6th-grade students. The relationship between verbal, written, and action expression is very important and relevant in her classroom. She uses labels and displays in her entire classroom. Charts, diagrams, graphs, and labels are used throughout the entire classroom to use when working through their curriculum and daily schedule. She used the main languages in all areas and repeated expressions regularly. Mrs. K was very patient, calm, and understanding during her classroom setting. She uses a soft and repetitive tone and style of communicating. If students struggle with understanding she used a "get on their level approach to allow them to understand before going away from the new language or lesson. She creates opportunities throughout her entire lessons to promote communication, express, and writing to show growth and understanding. When teaching ELL she said it is important to know your students and their background. Where they come from, their culture, and beliefs. This can help in understanding where to start and go. When preparing her content she finds out where they are first. Then she evaluates where they need to be and knows where they are strong and weak. We all know learning a new language is not easy but making it fun, informative, and relative can help inspire students to want to learn.
