M07 Discussion – Dynamics and Communication in Interpersonal Relationships

Discuss to what degree partners need to
merely accept, or actually adopt, one another’s love language.
The textbook on page 328, talks about love languages. Love languages are
separated into five sections, quality time, gifting, physical touch, words of affirmation,
and acts of service. Within your relationships each person might have a different love
language, in other words, they have a certain way that love is shown to them. The
textbook talks about how it is important to identify your partner’s love language. Doing
this will show love and fulfillment in both parties. In the video, it showed Nev and Laura,
Nev’s love language is physical touch, whereas Laura’s. love language is not accurately
displayed. The video showed different scenarios where Nev tries to incorporate each love
language into their relationship. For instance, he bought her a small gift, he said some
kind words while they brushed their teeth, he grabbed her water for her, and they spent
time together alone. We need to find each person’s love language and then accept and
adopt them so that we can have more fulfilling and happier relationships.

"Interpersonal - Knapp's Stages of Relational Development"

-
Which relational stage do you recognize most often in
relationships?
A relationship stage I recognize most often in growing relationships is experimenting.
The textbook gives more insight into what this actually is. On page 278, it says the
experimenting stage is the stage where small talk begins. In the video, this part of the stage
Fiona was asking questions and talking about herself. Every relationship goes through this
and it is quite easy to point out.

"Relationship Dialectics: The Incredibles"

site.
-
Describe the relational dialect tension you see here and why.
The way I interpreted this video was to say it is relational stability-change dialectic. The guy in
the video does not like the idea of just being a father and not going out to do what his wife and
he used to do. He does not like the routine and is getting bored with the idea of it.
4.)
Locate an example of another video clip that either displays love languages, Knapp's
relational stages, or dialectical tensions. Provide a link to that video clip and describe
what your example shows. Your video must be appropriate in language (videos should
not contain any profanity, hate speech, or discriminatory language) and be respectful of
all individuals and groups, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual
orientation, or ability.
This video showcases the love language, Words of Affirmation. Examples of words of
affirmation would be a compliment or even words of encouragement. In the video, the guy
performing needed someone to express to him that he was going to do great. His mother sent him
a message before his performance and his appearance changed. He seemed more confident and
felt better overall. When using the correct love language you can show someone just how much
you love them. There was an example of this in the video. Before the guy performing received
the message from his mom, someone came up to him and gave him flowers. He did not nearly
appreciate them as much as he appreciated his mother sending him that message.
