Dr. Sublett & Peers,
For this week’s discussion we have been asked how teachers can support the language
development of students who are English language learners and how can teachers ensure
students are learning while also promoting cultural awareness. We are also asked to
provide/describe 2-3 ways to support language development and cultural awareness in the
classroom. To begin,
as educators it is imperative that we meet the individual learning needs of
all students and this includes students that are ELLs. There are many ways in which a teacher
is able to support them and this can also include utilizing visual representations. Author Kristina
Robertson mentions in her article that “Teachers can also informally assess for correct use of
language structures and academic vocabulary. If ELLs are having difficulty with phrases or
vocabulary, the teacher will be able to offer guidance or further instruction to support language
development” (Robertson, n.d.). From my experience being a paraprofessional I was exposed to
a lot of different teaching methods and approaches. Just like any child, it’s always important to
know the child and their families. Parents and/or legal guardians are a child's first teachers
before they come into our classrooms. I personally, like to ensure I have an understanding of
languages and cultures in the home but, most importantly, like/dislikes. This always helps me to
have an understanding of what I need to modify and implement. As I mentioned before there are
many ways in which we are able to support language development and cultural awareness in
the classroom. Some ways include: hosting a class/schoolwide culture night. This would be the
opportunity to have volunteers to come speak about their country they are from, spoken
language, culture overview, and share traditional dishes; another way is to utilize visual
representation. This includes: maps, posters, videos, other forms of technology, and so much
more.
