Family: Instrument(s) Selection and Justification
When it comes to the Riverez family the best instrument to use when it comes to their family dynamics is sociogram. One big weakness in the families’ dynamics that needs to be worked on is communication. The sociogram will show the Riverez family in another from how their communication between each other, each other’s families, and their children is affecting them and how this has a huge impact on how they conduct their daily lives. It would guide them in a positive way on who they need to communicate more with and how they can build on certain relationships in the family where they may have felt there were no issues. At times showing families in other forms who they are and are not social with versus telling them can make a huge difference. Family: Information Derived
From what has been gathered from the assessment so far Quianna is taking care of the children at
home. The one issue that needs to be addressed is the stressed relationship Quianna and Julio have with their older son. Their older son who is 15 years old has already gotten into trouble both
in the neighborhood with the police and his parents. The police have already made assumptions that their son is affiliated with gangs because of his behavior. Their son has made statements that he does not want to finish school. Because of his parents’ background of not finishing school, he feels this is okay. Quianna and Julio do not have a good communication/ relationship with their son. It is safe to say it is stressful. This is an example of one issue that the sociogram can show them that they can work on.
Family: Interventions or Resources
The sociogram is a graphic representation which serves to reveal and analyze the relationships of
a person with their family or social circle, or to visualize the relationships within the family or of
certain members of the family with their external environment such as health and education services, leisure time activities, work, friends, or place in the extended family (Phaneuf, 2014). Interventions that would take place with this family are conducting family therapy between the immediate family Quianna, Julio, and their children to allow them the opportunity to tell each other how they truly feel. Once we can gain some improvement with immediate family, we will then incorporate Julio’s and Quianna’s family in therapy to help them with family support in tough situations. Community: Instrument(s) Selection and Justification
In the Riverez family I believe using a culturagram would be the best instrument to use when referring to the family in getting help in the community. The family resides in Chicago IL, in the Englewood area and has been there for a while. This area is predominantly African American but
is also large in the Hispanic culture as well. Barriers inside the family is language barriers because Julio and his family is Spanish speaking while Quianna’s family is not. These items help
highlight the community and environmental factors that directly impact the Riverez family. Community: Information Derived
With the language being a barrier between the family, mainly with Julio and his family, it can make it hard to connect with Quianna and the members of her family or even the community. Julio may get a sense of uncomfortably to the point where he shuts down which would explain the communication barrier. There can be assumptions of having two different beliefs in the

family to want to reach out for resources. This assumption is being presented due to Julio working two jobs and not looking to his family for support. Community: Interventions or Resources
The culturagram focuses on ten aspects of culture, including time in the community, legal status, reasons for relocating, languages spoken at home and in the community, health benefits, holidays
and special events, impact of crisis events, values about education, work and family, and cultural and religious institutions (Services, 2013). Interventions would be to present to the family multiple community centers within the Englewood area to assist with the family’s cultural difference. Finding assistance for Julio to learn English and Quianna to learn Spanish so that they
may learn to communicate better. This will also get each other to know they have others in the community like them. Introduce them to groups for them to be able to have social support until their families and them get along better.
