GED 3005_350 – The Science of Play Final Project Introduction There are numerous games and toys that have been influenced by different cultures, providing entertainment while simultaneously helping children develop cognitive, physical, and social skills. With advancements in technology, toys and games have also evolved. Among the companies that strive to make education fun for children is Leap Frog Enterprises, founded in 1995 by Michael Wood. Their products cover a range of subjects, including reading, math, geography, social studies, and science, and are available in 11 foreign languages through a partnership with Little Pim. While this is an excellent resource for children who speak languages other than English, I am interested in promoting educational learning opportunities for Indigenous children. As a strong advocate for the preservation and promotion of Indigenous languages, I strongly believe that Leapfrog Enterprises can play an essential role in this effort. I am eager to explore how Leapfrog toys and games can be enhanced to include Inuktitut and other Indigenous Canadian languages. My vision for this project is to make educational toys that children enjoy and at the same time, encourage language learning in Indigenous languages, Beginning with Inuktitut in particular. I think it would be incredibly beneficial for Indigenous children to be able to learn their native language through Leapfrog's products, while also helping to foster a sense of mutual understanding and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. By incorporating these languages, Leapfrog can help preserve and promote Indigenous languages while providing engaging and effective educational toys for children.

GED 3005_350 – The Science of Play Final Project Educational Apps The immense demand for mobile technology has caused a dramatic growth in the number of educational applications available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. A wide selection of apps providing educational materials and interactive learning activities are available on these app stores, suitable for users of all ages. Both parents and educators are able to conveniently access these apps, which encompass topics like mathematics, reading, science, and language study. Many apps are also available specifically designed for Indigenous language learning. Parents and caregivers can now use educational apps to supplement their child's learning and give them engaging and interactive activities to help them along in their educational journey. Leapfrog Enterprises can learn from the popularity of educational apps and the importance of language learning to improve their products for Indigenous children. Leapfrog can promote the usage of Indigenous languages by providing a stimulating and interactive learning environment for children. Leapfrog can also benefit from the extensive availability of educational apps by creating apps that are specifically designed for Indigenous language learning, providing accessible and affordable tools for families and communities. Engaging Indigenous Learners Indigenous learners in Canada have long been marginalized and faced various barriers to their education. They must become proficient in English, even if it is not their native tongue, which poses a challenge. Indigenous children may find it particularly difficult to comprehend the material and could feel estranged from their culture. As a result, there is a growing demand for more subjects to be available in Indigenous languages, such as Inuktitut. By offering educational materials in Indigenous languages, such as the LeapFrog products designed with Inuktitut language support, we can help Indigenous learners feel more connected to their cultural heritage and facilitate a greater sense of inclusivity and equity in education. It is crucial to address these disparities and provide Indigenous students with the resources and support they need to succeed in their educational journey. According to Groome and Hamilton (49), “Teachers have found Aboriginal students may be acutely self-conscious and fearful of failure, to a degree which is not found among other students. ‘Shame’ is a word which these students commonly use to describe situations of embarrassment and failure. Mishenene, Rachel, Walker, Vicky & Watt, Karen (2013). This is one of the few examples that demonstrate how using Indigenous languages in Leapfrog's apps and products can bolster children's self-assurance when learning their language. I wish I had the choice of studying all subjects in school in Inuktitut, because when I began school they only taught Inuktitut from kindergarten to grade 4. I also wish they included Indigenous languages in all the learning apps that were starting to become popular, like Leapfrog. Incorporating Indigenous Languages and Knowledge Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) pronounced Ee-new-eat Cow-yee-ma-yea-two-kung-eat, also known as Inuit traditional knowledge, refers to the collective knowledge, skills, and values of the Inuit people of the Arctic. Incorporating IQ into the design and development of Leapfrog products is one of the important steps for ensuring that the needs and perspectives of Inuit learners are addressed. To ensure the success of our design, we will conduct extensive testing with Indigenous children and their families. We will also partner with Indigenous language experts and educators to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of our language content to include: promoting language learning in Indigenous children and promoting cultural understanding and respect among non-Indigenous children. appealing to parents and caregivers who are looking for accessible and engaging resources to support their child's educational journey, as well as educators who are seeking innovative tools to support Indigenous language learning. Conclusion Ultimately, the integration of Indigenous languages and knowledge systems into LeapFrog products is a way to honor and celebrate cultural diversity and Indigenous peoples. By including Indigenous languages and knowledge in educational toys and tools, children can learn about different cultures and expand their understanding of the world around them. Furthermore, this approach can help to preserve and promote Indigenous languages and cultures, which are often under threat of being lost. LeapFrog's initiative serves as a positive example for other companies to follow in order to promote inclusivity and diversity in their products and to foster a more culturally sensitive society.
