1 Early Literacy Assignment Early Literacy Foundation Blocks Assignment Joseph Neil Ryan Liberty University, School of Education EDLC 554 Reading and Language Acquisition Dr. Alice Smith June 4, 2023
2 Early Literacy Assignment Literacy Block 1: Oral Language Description: Within the oral language literacy block, it covers the student’s ability to talk to their peers and adults, while also building on the skills to listen to their peers and adults as well during conversations. Oral language includes paying attention while receiving instruction, attention to characters in a story, make predictions, and active listening. Sample Activity: The teacher can have students read the Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham then discuss the story with the teacher once they finish reading it in a small group setting. After the student’s finish reading the story, they will tell the teachers who the characters are in complete sentences. While they are reading, the teacher will have them pause and make a prediction in what will happen next. Contextual Analysis: For students who have special needs, this literacy block is important to them because it provides them with the extra focus on simple literacy components. Elements of oral language are used in everyday life regardless of if you have disabilities, ELL, or if you are a general education student. This literacy block in particular helps students who are special needs build on those simple life skills that they can build on the further they get in their educational careers and life in general. Literacy Block 2: Vocabulary Description: Vocabulary literacy block explains the words that students will use and how to communicate those vocabulary words as well. Within the vocabulary literacy block, it covers the words that describe colors, shape, person, place, or thing, understanding words that others are using, expanding on expressive vocabulary, and building a better vocabulary.
3 Early Literacy Assignment Sample Activity: To build on students’ vocabulary, literacy centers are the appropriate approach. With four unique stations for students to work at, the students will build on their vocabulary. Station one will be with the teacher doing vocabulary flash cards and a vocabulary tic tac toe which involves the students correctly saying a word then having the opportunity to place their x or o on the board. Station two will be IXL games. Station three will be reading vocabulary books. Station four will be vocabulary coloring worksheets. Contextual Analysis: The literacy block that focuses on vocabulary is an important piece for students who are English Language Learners, ELL. The reason as to why this is important to students who are ELL is because they are currently building their skills within the English language. By learning more and more vocabulary while they learn how to speak and read English, gives them that extra skillset. Literacy Block 3: Phonological Awareness Description: The process of phonological awareness and the meaning of phonological awareness is the ability to blend sounds together to form words that are either known or unknown. Within phonological awareness includes identifying and reiterating rhyming words, pronouncing consonant sounds, identify beginning sounds, and point out syllables within multi-syllable words. Sample Activity: To assist with students learning and building on their phonological awareness, students can split into teams to play rhyming word games. The teacher, once students are split into teams, will give a word that students need to rhyme with. The students will write the rhyming word onto a whiteboard and whichever teams get a correct word written, they will receive a point towards their team.
