Topic 4 – 2 ELM 315 I believe all students experience some level of anxiety and self-esteem issues when it comes to reading out loud in front of peers and for a struggling reader, reading in front of others can sometimes cause a student to completely shut down, withdraw themselves, and discontinue participating in classroom discussions and activities. To help foster a safe classroom environment, I will always ask for volunteers who are comfortable and confident to read in front of the class. I will spend time educating my students about differences and diversity and I will inform students that we all have different learning styles and needs and that we all learn at different paces. I will assess each student’s reading competency levels before asking them to read in front of the entire class and provide positive feedback and encouragement in small group settings to help build students' confidence. I will encourage and utilize small group activities for students who need additional support and positive feedback to create an environment that offers less anxiety and pressure, allowing them to feel safer and more confident. I will respect students’ boundaries and comfort zones when it comes to participating, and I will work to get to know each of my students and their individual needs. I will do my best to build positive and meaningful relationships with my students and maintain an environment that supports each of them socially, emotionally, and academically. Classroom caffeine Repeated readings. Apply methods. Assisted reading and have it read to them as they follow. Proficient readers. 1st -5th foundational reading competencies. Comprehension problems because of foundational skills. Above grade level achieving student. If reading is difficult students won’t read. Shaping students thinking about why fluency is important. Making things authentic helps engage students. Practice enough so that it has meaning. Model fluent reading so they can see and hear text read interestingly. The key is to find authenticity. Teach the science of reading in artful ways. Word study is boring, try banana grams, scrabble, boggle, password, tabu, balderdash, and buzzword... games make word study feel like a game and help engage learners.
