A Language and Literacy Development Journey Outline Part 1: Conceptualizing Your Child Introduction: My Child in Context The child in observance is Kayden. He is the youngest of three brothers and one sister. He has a pet dog named Rocko. Kayden had a rough prenatal experience and was born three weeks early. While in the womb, Kayden’s heart rate dropped, and his mom had an emergency c-section. After birth, doctors told Kayden’s mom, due to certain factors that Kayden experienced he may experience intellectual and learning defects. According to PubMed (), if a mother experiences any stress she may increase the risk for her child having a wide range of emotional problems, symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or impaired cognitive development. However, Kayden enjoys doing family crafts, going on family outings, and listening to his older siblings and mother read to him. Kayden is from a single parent home in a low socioeconomic community. His mom is the primary caregiver in the house and his older siblings help her out with household chores and with taking care of him. Due to his mother’s workload, it’s hard for her to help with Kayden due to his learning disability and high crime rate in his neighborhood make it harder to spend time outside of the house with her children. According to Parret and Budge (2016), poverty-related factors that hinders the child’s ability to learn includes health and well-being, limited literacy and language development, access to materials resources and level of mobility. It is important that children and their families have open access to resources that will help children in low-income families and children who are affected by learning disabilities to ensure them with effective ways of learning. In Kayden’s household English is the primary language spoken. However, in his
community its mixed with African American and Hispanic families where some families speak Spanish, and he has learned to understand some words from members of his community. The literacy and language resources that are available to Kayden are use of the public library in his community and also the Ferst Readers program. Ferst is a program that offer quality books and literacy resources to children in the earliest stages of development. Kayden school also participated in a program called Book Blast where donors donate small monetary amounts to offer children at least one new book on their reading level.
