Student Name: CFS 210 Chapter 1 Activity: Scientific Investigation Directions: Students will use Artificial Intelligence “AI”/ Chat GPT to design a hypothetical research study to examine a research question they have chosen. Students will then critically assess which parts of the research study were correctly designed by the AI, and which parts were incorrect, based on what it says about research methodology in Chapter 1 of our text. 1) Select one of the following research questions to investigate in your study: A) What is the relationship between playing violent video games and aggressive behaviors in childhood? B) What factors related to parental divorce are associated with increased stress and anxiety among children of divorce? C) How is parenting style associated with different types of infant temperament? D) How is parent-child attachment associated with increased academic performance during the elementary school years? 2) Create a prompt for ChatGPT/ other AI platform, asking it to design a research study to answer your research question. Write your ChatGPT prompt here: Please construct a research study of the following research question: How is parenting style associated with different types of infant temperament?” ***Now- use your brain to critically examine the research study ChatGPT has suggested…*** 3) Which of the following methods would be most appropriate for you to test your hypothesis for your research question? And did ChatGPT suggest that one? A) scientific observation – to record behavior systematically and objectively B) experiment – to establish causality (using experimental and control groups) C) survey – to collect a large amount of information quickly by interview/questionnaire *Write about your preferred method vs ChatGPT’s suggested method here. Compare and contrast . My most preferred method for testing my hypothesis would be scientific observation. I think it would be more effective rather than just relying on a survey to conclude. Observing the behavior for myself I think would be best. ChatGPT suggested conducting a parental survey first and then observing parent-infant interactions in a controlled setting to capture real-time parenting behaviors. Although, I do agree with conducting a survey first to assess their parenting styles, if I only had to choose one method it would be scientific observation. 4) If your research question involves addressing change over time, which type of research design would be best? And did ChatGPT suggest that one? A) Cross-sectional B) Longitudinal C) Cross-sequential *Write about your preferred design vs ChatGPT’s suggested design here. [Your response should be 3-5 sentences.] I would personally use a longitudinal research design. Data only needs to be collected from the same group at multiple points in time. The variables can be
observed better using this method which will allow us to conclude better. Our observations only need to be taken in infants, not in a large group of people. ChatGPT suggested this method as well and after thinking through each design I fully agree. 5) Would the results of your research study be able to determine a cause-and-effect relationship? Why or why not? Any insights from ChatGPT? [Your response should be 3-5 sentences.] Yes, the results of the research study would be able to determine a causeand-effect relationship. From constructing a survey from the parents beforehand on their parenting style and then observing the behavior of children, the behavior, as a result, can be seen. The parent’s choices could have a large effect on the way their children act. ChatGPT suggests that researchers should interpret each finding cautiously, emphasizing the observed associations rather than just assuming a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
