Transfer of Skills and Language Acquisition

Learning a second language it is hard when there are not opportunities to create connection with the native language. This is why it is important that educators used as many strategies to create connection between the second language and the students’ first language. This will provide students an opportunity to create a solid foundation in their language learning comprehension. There are multiple strategies that educator could apply within a lesson, however,
strategies need to be consistence for a better result. Students need to have that routine to be able to create connection, especially dual immersion programs where students need to be rotating between two classes. Instructional Strategies
Picture Word Inductive Model is a strategy that can be use in all the grade levels. It is a strategy that supports students’ learning with the use of pictures to improve student’s comprehension and to facilitate their language acquisition. Picture word inductive model is a great strategy to use when introducing new vocabulary, nouns, or verbs (Lbreiseth, 2024)
. This strategy can be use in any subject. It is flexible you can always use the pictures as flashcards when practicing the new words learned. Sentence frames and student friendly explanation, those are functional strategies to use within a class. At the same time, it provides opportunities for English language to understand and
comprehend better the new vocabulary or content with friendly explanation and use that vocabulary later in the lesson within a sentence frame (Donnelly & Roe, 2010)
. This technique improves students’ language development by allowing them to use sentence frames to express their thoughts.
These two techniques are tools for students to transfers the skills they already have from their first language to their second language by creating meaningful explanation and connection that allows students to transfer skills learned in one language to a second language. Lesson Plan
Research mentioned that transfer of skills is when a person master a knowledge of skill and he/she is able to apply it in another setting or context, more likely it is a cognitive practice (Transfer of Knowledge to New Contexts, 2021). Transfer of skills is important to the language acquisition of second language learners because they apply the skills or knowledge they already know to a new language. Students create a cognitive connection between their background knowledge and skills to the content and language they are learning. The bilingual model that was selected is One-Way Immersion Program, Picture Word Inductive Model support this bilingual model because students will be exposed to the same content in both language and this will increase and allow them opportunities to create connection
between content and language. For example, English language learners are introduced to the vocabulary with pictures in the Spanish class, the next day, they continue the lesson in the English class with the same pictures but the vocabulary in English language. Students have been already exposed to their background knowledge the day before, now they will be able to learn the language and transfer skills in their English class. At the same time, sentence frame will support students’ language development, they will be able to apply the vocabulary language taught when comparting the lengths of the yarns. These strategies connect each other to support students learning, which it is the same as One-Way immersion program, content is taught in both
languages to allow students to create connection between content and language. .

Conclusion
In conclusion transfer of skills will support English language learners learning by creating connections between their background knowledge and skills to their second language. Picture word inductive model help students create connection between words and pictures those pictures can be use in both classes for students have the knowledge connection in an immersion program. Friendly explanation strategy facilitates students understanding when working with new content; most of the time, books definitions are to complex and create confusion. Educators can create friendly explanation that will be meaningful to students. Last but not least, sentences frame, students will be exposed to sentences frame most of the time. Sometimes it is hard for students to come up with a sentence that explain their thoughts when there are learning with a second language or even when they need to apply new vocabulary within the sentences. There is where sentence frames take place, it supports students’ language development. References
