Career Choice: Animal Control Officer
Career Information
An animal control officer enforces state laws and ordinances and educates the public on
responsible pet ownership. Animal control officers are responsible for enforcing county laws
regarding stray, dangerous nuisance, and unwanted domestic animals. They investigate
complaints, patrol areas, capture animal, and perform other duties related to humane animal
protection and control.
Animal Control's mandate is to uphold local animal laws and inform the public about
responsible pet ownership. Animal Control offers a range of services to the Shawnee community,
including rescuing sick or injured animals, managing stray animals, responding to dangerous
animals that are running loose, removing dead animals, issuing licenses, looking into allegations
of animal abuse and cruelty, investigating complaints of animal noise, unsanitary conditions, and
abandonment. Responding to dog bites is one of Animal Control's most crucial duties. Animals
that bite are discovered, isolated, and monitored for the possibility of rabies.
Watchman Style
This approach focuses on upholding law and order while also reining in illegal and
disruptive activity. In a watchman-style department, officers use a lot of discretion and frequently
disregard minor infractions, particularly those involving children and traffic. Instead of making
formal arrests, officers utilize coercion, intimidation, or even "hassle" or "rough up" disruptive
individuals. This style of government is typically found in working-class areas with political
mayor-city council systems. (2018) (Dempsey et al.)
Using the chosen career of animal control officer, the watchman style of policing would
be implemented during a ride through of a neighborhood and find an animal in a yard with no
shelter to get out of the weather. They might be able to approach the door, inform the owner, and
instruct them to bring the dog inside or construct a dog home for them to stay cool. Only when
speaking to the owner for the first time may this situation apply. If the officer had seen the dog
out for days on end in the scorching weather, the situation might have been very different.
Legalistic Style
Animal control officers have the authority to cite, warn, or take animals away from their
owners while they are looking into a case of animal abuse. Animal abuse can take many different
forms, such as punching, kicking, and other physical acts. Neglect and appalling living
conditions are further possibilities.
Service Style
The main service I believe animal control officers should offer to their communities is
just being there. It would be beneficial if they chose to approach folks on foot or by driving with
their windows down. This will make the public feel like they can approach the officer and ask
questions.
Additionally, animal control officers can aid in educating their communities about
animal regulations. They should instead educate people and give them knowledge and resources
for their animals rather than prosecuting them for things.
Recruitment and Candidate Vetting Process
When different agencies need an animal control officer they post on the county’s website,
the state governments career page, and they also have posted on their social media accounts such
as Facebook.
They all require that you fill out the application online and then once reviewed they will
set up an interview if you meet the qualifications. There are several qualifications that are
required and preferred.

animals, methods of evaluating, capturing, and handling animals, knowledge of city ordinances
relating to animal control, and knowledge of the safety requirements of the work performed are
all desirable. The capacity to keep accurate records and reports and the capacity to comprehend
and affect the behavior of others within the organization, clients, or the public are also desirable.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent standing, walking, and running are among the physical
demands, as are frequent lifting of up to 60 pounds, frequent carrying of up to 10 pounds, and
occasionally pushing and pulling of up to 60 pounds. Other physical demands include frequent

Having a current Class "D" Operator's License from Oklahoma;
obtaining and maintaining an Animal Euthanasia Technician Certification within eighteen
months of the hire date.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Much of the time, and even occasionally when it's bad outside,
I work outside. Exposure to the following is possible: Animal waste/dead animals, traffic,
confined workspaces, harsh terrains, damp/wet surfaces, snow/ice coated surfaces, animal bites,
bug bites, poisonous plants, toxic fumes/vapors/odors, and loud noises are some of the hazards
that may be present.
Theory of Policing
Preventative and evidence-based theory – Preventative is stopping things from happening
before they happen. With animal control patrolling neighborhoods and people seeing them out
they are less likely to abuse their animal with people watching. They are less likely to leave their
animal tied out without food and water. Evidence based theory of policing that makes decisions
about what is best for the goal and mission. This is used to fic the problem at hand.
We are hoping that the more people see an animal control officer then they are more than
likely to take better care of their pet so they don’t receive a fine of the loss of their pet.
