Instructions for critical thinking questions:
▪
You ALWAYS need to complete these assignments! But only four will be graded for content and one will be checked
for completion.
▪
Complete the reading(s) and/or watch the media BEFORE answering these questions.
▪
Answer each question in one paragraph comprised of at least four complete sentences.
▪
If the assignment is graded for 22 possible points:
o
Each paragraph is worth five possible points: you may earn up to four points for the answer and up to one
point for the in-text citation for each question.
o
You may also earn up to two points for the reference(s) at the end of the assignment. (A reference must be
provided for each source, regardless of how many sources were used for the discussion prep.)
o
You are required to include both an in-text citation for every paragraph and include the reference for each
source at the end of the assignment. If an in-text citation is missing, 0 points will be earned for that
paragraph. If a reference at the end of the assignment is missing, 0 points will be earned for those two
possible points.
o
If you are not sure how to write an in-text citation or a reference from an article from a website,
please look in the folder called “APA resources” for guidance.
▪
Post your answers to the questions in the
journal before class begins.
Week 10:
There are no CTQs for Tuesday as your health care, ethics, and equity assignment is due that day.
Answer these questions before class on Thursday: (Yes, three questions!)
1.
Summarize the videos called “Why Are There So Many More Crisis Pregnancy Center than Abortion Clinics and
“Misconception: The Fake Abortion Centers of America” Be sure to discuss: What types of services and information
are offered to clients at CPCs? Is the information offered medically accurate, and why is that important to note? What
do the staff of CPCs say about their own mission and goals? What are the laws about CPCs?
At CPCs they offer free sonograms that come with counseling and information about the risks of abortion. The
information they offer are not medically actuate and can be very religiously driven. They offer information about the risk
of abortion yet most have been disproved through multiple scientific studies. Some women were told that there was a
definitely link between abortion and breast cancer, the more abortions you had the higher the risk for cancer was (Ward &
Yarrow). They also like to give inaccurate information about the risks of abortion for example saying that the risk of death
with an abortion is 10%, when that is not true for any form of abortion (NBC News). Some other schooling things heard
were that they misdated a women pregnancy and also said that if you die of an abortion they find part of the fetus in the
lungs or the heart (Ward & Yarrow). This is important to note because when hearing this risk it will scare women into not
getting an abortion or if they misdate a pregnancy the women will no longer be able to get abortion because of how far
along she is. One women state that their mission was “to empower abortion vulnerable women to choose life” (NBC
News). Another pro life activist stated that they are trying to look professional and medical to bring in vulnerable women
who think they are coming into a abortion clinic (Ward & Yarrow). Regulation surrounding CPCs is gray to say the least
and while some are funded by tax dollars they do not have all the regulations that constrain them. For example they are
not required to have medical staff and they a law that states that they do not have to offer or giver referrals for abortion
clinics (NBC News).
2.
Summarize the key points made in the article titled “Why Crisis Pregnancy Centers Are Legal but Unethical” in the
American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics. Be sure to discuss: what do crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) do?
What are the arguments against CPCs? Are they legal? Are they ethical or unethical? Why? What are the authors’
ideas about how CPCs could operate in a more ethical manner?
Crisis pregnancy centers are religiously affiliated organizations that take an anti-abortion approach to unwanted
pregnancies and usually only prop mete the options of parenting or adoption (Bryant & Swartz, 2018). The arguments
against CPSs are that they use different types of deception to trick women into thinking that they are a medical facility
with factual evidence. For example the staff does not need to be medically certified but will wear the white coats to trick
women. They also have locations near actual abortion center and will use confusing signage to get women to mistakenly
go there instead of the actual clinic. While they may be legal it is because they exist in a legal gray area where they have
no regulatory oversight. What they do is protected by the first amendment which means they have he freedom to say what
they want. While they do offer some women the help they may need, they are still spreading misinformation and using
misleading tactics which means that they are not ethical. Since they have no regulation they are also unethical because
they do not follow the fundamental pillars that most medical practices must. To be more ethical they could start by
stopping the spread of incorrect information and only give out proven evidence to women. They should also stop with
their duping of patients and be very open and honest about what they do instead of tricking people (Bryant & Swartz,
2018).
3.
Summarize the keys points made in the article titled “Whistleblower Alleges 'Medical Neglect,' Questionable
Hysterectomies of ICE Detainees.” Be sure to discuss: What happened to the women in the immigration detention
center? How do we know this happened? What is ICE’s response? Which groups are supporting these women, and
what actions are they taking to do so? In your opinion, did a violation of ethics occur in this detention center?
At the Irwin Detention Center there was a group of
immigrant women who were forced into mass hysterectomies,
which is the removing of the uterus (Treiman, 2020). Not only that there were multiple accusation of human rights abuse
like lack of COVID testing, shredding medical requests, and allowing sick employees work and expose the immigrants. A
whistleblower, which is an inside person who was apart of the issue gave up information about the topic, let it be known
that this was occurring. ICE responded by giving out statements that states that they dispute these claims and that they are
not true. Many different organizations are urging for investigation and the passing of protection acts. American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologist wrote to the attorney general to have the center investigated. Other organizations like the
American Immigration Lawyers Association and the American Immigration Council are also urging Congress to do the
same. This is a unethical issue that occurs these people were not given the basic human rights and were treated in an
unethical way. They were coerced into procedure they would not want and were forced to live in unsafe conditions
(Treiman, 2020).
