, 2001: U.S Patriot Act
The act was passed by the U.S. Congress and President George W. Bush shortly after the
September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States. “The Patriot Act is to improve the
abilities of U.S. law enforcement to detect and deter terrorism” (History, 2017). The act also
allowed law enforcement, the FBI, and CIA to use surveillance and wiretapping to investigate
terror-related crimes, delayed notification search warrants to prevent a terrorist from learning
they are a suspect and allowed search warrants to be obtained in any district where terror-related
activity occurs, no matter where the warrant is executed, and improving information and
intelligence sharing between government agencies.

, 2001: Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
TSA was passed by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush. TSA was
created to oversee security in all modes of transportation and to strengthen the security of the
nation’s transportation systems while ensuring the freedom of movement for people and
commerce.

TSA also helps to protect highways, railroads, buses, mass transit systems, ports,
and pipelines. They operate security checkpoints at airports to better screen passengers and
travelers to prevent airplane hijackings” (Rodriguez, 2023).

, 2002: Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002
The Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 was created to
enhance border security. “This law authorized the hiring of additional INS investigators and
inspectors and expanded screening procedures for admission, as well as mechanisms for tracking
deportable aliens within the United States” (Department of History, 2020). Enhanced Border

Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 has an impact on the field of law enforcement and
on citizens by issuing international visitors only machine-readable, tamper-resistant visas and
other travel and entry documents that use biometric identifiers.

, 2002: Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
DHS Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush. “DHS took on
responsibilities ranging from infrastructure protection and chemical, biological, radiological,
nuclear, and related countermeasures to border and transportation security, emergency
preparedness and response, and coordination with other parts of the federal government, with
state and local governments, and with the private sector” (Samuels, 2023). DHS has an impact on
the field of law enforcement and on citizens by securing U.S. land and maritime borders and
keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the United States.

, 2008: The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Amendments Act of 2008
“FISA was passed by Congress and broad support from the intelligence community,
allows intelligence professionals to more quickly and effectively monitor terrorist
communications, while protecting the civil liberties of Americans” (USDOJ, n.d.). FISA ensures
that the intelligence community has the tools it needs to determine who terrorists are
communicating with all whiles providing new civil liberties protections for Americans and
protects the country from terrorist threats. FISA has an impact on the field of law enforcement
and on citizens by developing an intelligence surveillance to protect the American people from
many national security threats, like intellectual property theft, espionage, or terrorism.
