School Board Meeting - Field Experience POS-500-O501 Soleil Dixon-Widman May 24, 2023
I viewed a Policy Committee Meeting held on April 27, 2023, for my school's District. On the agenda, several policies and policies were implemented throughout the District that needed to be reviewed. The board discussed Policy 008 Goals and Guardrails, Policy 137 Home Education Programs, Policy 137.1 Extracurricular Participation by Home Education Students, Policy 227 Controlled Substances/Paraphernalia, Policy 235.1 Student Surveys, Policy 237 Student Use of Electronic Devices, Policy 703 School Cleanliness and Classroom Management, Policy 712 Naming of School District Properties, Policy 717 District-Issued Mobile Communications Devices, Policy 717.1 District-Issued Computers and Portable Computing Devices, Policy 805.1, Relations with Law Enforcement Agencies Policy 807 - Opening Exercises/Flag Displays, and Policy 808 Food Services. In discussion with the school board were various people in attendance, such as people from the community, parents, teachers, and administrators. The parents and teachers were there to learn about the District's policies and were allowed to ask questions along with administrators. Community members played a part as they had concerns about new policies. Parents support their children as teachers help their students, and administrators support the District. I was not surprised by who attended the meeting. However, following along with who was talking during the Zoom meeting was difficult. It didn't seem like parents were at the meeting, but community members and leaders were present. I learned much from the board meeting, as the District has many policies. This meeting was a way for the District to collaborate with everyone in the school community and outside the school community to hear the different perspectives on policies. The board is responsible for making decisions that
affect the District, and now I will always be informed about the decisions that are made in the District. A couple of conversations stood out to me during the board meeting, such as goals and guardrails. Goals and Guardrails aims to empower students to reach their full potential. The board spent much time on this topic, breaking down the targets to monitor student learning. I learned that goals and guardrails are reviewed at least every five years to improve academic achievement for students. In closing, I learned that the District opens its doors to all before considering implementing new policies. The presentations were very civil and easy to follow. Policies changed frequently based on the data collected in schools. They use this data to determine whether it will better the outcome of students' success or not. Before implementation, it is for the community to help decide if this is good for students are not. Using what I learned as a teacher will help my students and their families navigate to additional help regarding their child's success. If a policy needs to be understood, I can help a family at future board meetings to understand any issues better. The only way to improve its schools would be to work together to ensure all students have access to quality education.
