Week 5 Discussion SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY Your assigned reading from Chapter 19 concentrates on how to create an automated BPM solution. An automated BPM solution is represented by business rules and process elements. This solution integrates internal IT systems and collaborates with external entities as directed by the business rules. When a solution calls for software development, a company can follow either a linear Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), commonly called the waterfall, or a more iterative approach, such as Rapid Application Development (RAD). RESOURCES Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.  WEEKLY RESOURCES To prepare,  read Chapter 19 in the course text, as assigned in this week’s Learning Resources. BY DAY 3 Post  an analysis of the diverse aspects of BPM software development. You may focus on the choice of development life cycle (e.g., SDLC, RAD), the BPM system structure (e.g., three-tier), or quality assurance. Pick one strategy and explain its strengths and weaknesses. BY DAY 7 Respond  to  two  or more of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways: Ask a probing question. Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
Offer and support an opinion. Validate an idea with your own experience. Make a suggestion. Expand on your colleague’s posting. Return  to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made. Pick one strategy and explain its strengths and weaknesses. Business Process Management has a lifecycle standard so the project can be broken into phases and is a repeatable process. According to Malak (2022), the stages of the lifecycle are design, model, execute, monitor, and optimize. The design phase is probably the most difficult and time consuming as many decisions need to be made. “T his may be performed by interviewing all parties, studying any documents, comprehending the business rules, and, if feasible, observing it in action,” Malak (2022). The next step is to model. It gives the business a visual of the design. “This may be performed by interviewing all parties, studying any documents, comprehending the business rules, and, if feasible, observing it in action,” Malak (2022). The execute phase is testing the design and see how it functions. Monitor and optimize are the past phases and are reviewing the data and making changes to improve it. These steps are absolutely critical to the implementation, but changes to the business goal or strategies with new initiatives or agreement on design can cause issues. Damorelos (2018) provides some of the advantages to using BPM are: 1. Problem solving simplified and reduced risks – work processes are distributed to the right employees. 2. Measurability – Key performance indicators are developed and visable allowing for continual improvement.
3. Customer and employee excellence – BPM has a customer focus and allows for employee growth. Some of the disadvantages highlighted by Damorelos (2018) are: 1. Weak management and loss of funds – The system must be implemented correctly. If weak information is provided or employees just don’t buy in, the reports will not be accurate or helpful. 2. Lack of communication - Some company’s think BPM creates silos because of the breakdown of workflows. References Damorelos. (2018, September 4).
