Greyson Corporation Background
Greyson corporation was established by three scientists of the University of California in the year 1970. The company’s main goal was to conduct research and development for the latest and advance military weaponry
Greyson solely handled R&D contracts, which was a success for the company. There was no requirement for the engineers or scientist to share their loyalties with production programs
Highlighted point was that Greyson corporation had a strong functional manager whose department would perform the majority of the work, the working relationships between departments was excellent
In 2002, Greyson entered into a competition with Cameron Aerospace for development, qualification, and testing of the Navy’s Neptune missile. The competition was an eight-motor shoot-off during the last 10 months of 2003
Cameron corporation won the contract owing to technical merit. Cameron increasing financial difficulties have resulted in the Navy’s search for and alternate vendor
The navy proposed to Greyson to be the sole source contractor for the Neptune program
Structure of the Project Manager and Team
Greyson organizational structure had its drawbacks and benefits. Greyson decided to into production of military weapons to obtain profits in the production marketplace. Greyson decided to reorganization from functional to a matrix structure . The matrix structure is complex and has it’s challenges, which need multiples reporting line managers with experience in shaping the corporation. Project team is needed to plan budgets, KPI’s and staying on track. Planning is very important factor in the project efficiency and success of the project lifecycle, establish clear goals and effective communication
