Week 11 Lab 9 – Device Location and MAP
Background / Scenario
A company may have branches in different locations. Using map and configure devices in different locations, helps Network Security Experts and SOCs to identify the locations and responds to the alerts faster.
As VMs do not have access to the Internet, addresses may not show properly.
Please note:

Save all screen captures and answers in a file named “W11_L9_

.docx” and upload to the Week 11 Lab submission folder.
Part 1) Update Device Location
Login to PRTG.
a)
Click on the devices and hover mouse on “LAN” in the list of devices and groups under Root, and select “Setting”

On the “Edit Object LAN”, change Group Name to the “Campus LAN”.
Scroll down and click on “Inherit From” on the Location and type following address:
1385 Woodroffe Ave, Nepean, ON K2G 1V8
Then select “Ok”.

Note
: As PCs are not connected to the Internet and Location field uses Geo Maps, it may not display proper Map and address.
Then hover the mouse on the icon and click on the icon in the map. Take a
screen capture of the window that appears.
All devices under “Campus LAN” should appear with the same address.
You may zoom out on the map to display map.
b) Under “Campus LAN” group, select one of the discovered devices and hover the mouse on the icon on the left side of the device name, then select the “setting”.
From list of “Device Icon” choose the one that matches with the device operating system or type. (Like Windows or Linux icon)

Scroll down and click on “Inherit From” on the Location and type following address in
the location box:
1 College Way, Pembroke, ON, K8A 0C8
Then select “Ok”.
c) Hover the mouse on the icon and click on the icon in the map. Take a screen capture of the window that appears.

d) Click on the “Campus LAN” icon on the map that you made on Step a).

Part 2) Create a map
Login to PRTG web interface.
a)
Hover on the “Maps” option then select “Add Map”
Select a name for the map. In this example, it is “Campus LAN”
Resize the map. (Default settings in this example)
Select a background image, if you want to have a background.
Define public access. (Default in this example)
No public access
: Allows only users who are logged in to PRTG to view the map. Allow public access
: Anyone can view the map via a unique URL.
Allow public access, disable all links
: Map is not interactive.
Then click on “Create”.
b)
In “Map Designer” screen, under “Device Tree” expand “Campus LAN” icon.
Then select device from the list and drag it to the map grid.

To change the Icon, from “Properties” select an Icon and drag it over to the device.
In this example, an icon selected from “Icon A” list, Note
this is an dynamic icon and you can see the sensors identified on the device.
If you select an static icon, sensors will not be displayed in the map.
Add all devices in the “Campus LAN”, Probe Device and a switch from “Properties” area to the map grid and change icons based on your choice.
You can change size of the icon on the “Properties” area.

In this step you connect devices to each other.
c)
Hold the cursor on the dot, left side of the icon and drag to the other device.
In this example, all devices are connected to the Switch.

d) Expand “Geo Maps” in the “Properties” area then add one of the options to the
map grid.

e) Click on “View Map” and take a screen capture.
f) Select “Setting” and change the map size, then save.
g) Select “Get HTML” and based on your choice of access, copy the link under option 1 or option 2.
Note:
If the links contains the name of the device, replace it with the IP address of the device. As there is no DNS server to resolve the name.
In this example, PC name changed with the IP address of the device.
