Background / Scenario
Network monitoring systems use Simple Network Management Protocol to communicate with devices to poll information and metrics from managed devices and display them.
In this lab we work with PRTG and configure SNMP on to get information.
Please note:
1) “
Username”
is your college username. 2)
Save all screen captures and answers in a file named “W10_L8_
username
.docx” and upload to the Week 10 Lab submission folder.
Part 1) Work With SNMP
Login to PC1, open a browser and type PC2_Win10 IP address in the address bar and login to the PRTG.

a)
Add 10.10.4.254, pfsense device, if it has not already discovered during auto discovery process. Then select pfsesne and add a new sensor by move the mouse on the icon and click on “Add Sensor”.
In the “Add Sensor” page, search for “SNMP” and select “SNMP Traffic”.

Week 10 Lab 8 – Configure SNMP
Take a screen capture after ending “Prepare sensor Setting” window.
Following steps, you will enable and install SNMP on pfsense.
b) Open a browser and type 10.10.4.254 in the address bar.
Use below credential to login:
admin
Algonquin$123

Under Services, select SNMP.

Configure SNMP as below:
SNMP Daemon: Check “Enable the SNMP Daemon and its controls”
SNMP Daemon Settings:
Polling Port: Keep the default value (161)
System Location: Algonquin College – Room C271
System Contact: <Type your name>
Read Community String: <Type Your Student ID>
SNMP Traps Enable:
Check “Enable the SNMP Trap and its controls”
SNMP Trap Settings:
Trap server: <Type NMS IP Address>
Trap Server Port: Keep the default value (162)
SNMP Trap String: pfsense
Week 10 Lab 8 – Configure SNMP
SNMP Modules and Interface Binding: Keep default values then save changes.

Back to PRTG and select pfsense under Devices > Device List . Then click on “Settings”. In the “Credentials for SNMP Devices” section, add the “Read Community String” used in previous step, then click on “Save”.

On PRTG, select pfsesne add a new sensor by move the mouse on the icon and click on “Add Sensor”. In the “Add Sensor” page, search for “SNMP” and select “SNMP Traffic”.
Take a screen capture of the pfsense’s sensors.
Part 2) Capture SNMP Traffic with Wireshark
Run Wireshark on the system that PRTG is installed
a)
Add pfsense IP address, 10.10.4.254 in the capture filter
then use following filter
in display filter
udp port 161 or 162 In the captured packets, which community strings do you see?_________
Take a screen capture.
b)
After 10 minutes, stop the capturing and save the file with the following format and upload it to the Week 10 Lab submission folder.
W10_L8_username.pcapng
Note:
“Username” is your College username. This is the end of the lab.
