Part 1: Case Study Scenario
Read carefully the Case Study Scenario given below. Scenario - Red Opal Innovations (ROI) Read Red Opal Innovations Scenario – ROI_Scenario.pdf
to gain an understanding of the background of Red Opal Innovations.
Scenario - Red Opal Innovations (ROI) – Training Centre
ROI management has decided to establish a new Training Centre to provide on-the-job training for their employees. The day-to-day operation of the Training Centre will be managed by the Human Resources department. However, any issues that are IT related will be managed by the ROI IT Support department. The ROI management has agreed to convert one spare room in the administration area for use as the Training Centre. This room will be used for the face-to-face and online training of their new and existing employees. The room already has 10 workstations with a Windows 8 operating system. The workstations
have been networked using Cat 5 cable, connected to an old hub, with shared bandwidth of 100 Mbps. This room is not currently connected to the corporate network or the Internet.
ROI have requested access to the Internet in the Training Centre for staff to access online training resources. The room will be an isolated network without access to the corporate network.
ROI are interested in making use of open-source software in their organisation. For this reason, the Training Centre will use a Linux based operating system on the workstations. The
IT Support department has indicated that CentOS7.x would be suitable as an operating system. Initially, they want to install the system performance monitoring applications and the latest version of Firefox on the workstations. They require that the installation of the operating system and applications be effortless making use of software deployment tools, which need to be purchased.
The ROI IT Support department has subcontracted you as a network specialist to carry out this work under their management. ROI requires that you work under ROI policies, procedures and guidelines. For this reason, any IT work must be reported to management, for approval, prior to the commencement of work. This will be important for the Training Centre as any deployment issues, including the total cost of hardware and software, must be identified prior to the commencement of operations. ROI guidelines also state that all software is to be properly licensed and that any software licenses should be kept in an IT safe. This also applies to any open-source software.
A budget of $20,000 has been allocated to this project for any IT related expenses including the purchase of hardware, operating systems, tools or software. This budget does not include any associated staff costs or non-IT related costs such as furniture.
You have been given the responsibility to work on this project starting with preparing documentation ready to be presented to the ROI management for approval.
