Assessment task 2
Task instructions
This assessment allows you to apply your skills and knowledge to the planning, coordination and management of a construction project. The construction project can occur in your workplace or simulated environment. If you’re unable to apply this to your workplace (for example, current building projects do not align with the requirements of the assessment, or you do not have access to a workplace), discuss alternatives with your teacher/assessor. This unit must be carried out over the course of a construction project to include all parts of the project worksheet. In addition to completing the project worksheet, you will also submit documents relating to the construction project, video recordings and photographs as required by the project worksheet. The work must be your own work. This project must be completed in full. Responses should apply directly to your workplace. This project is to be completed based on the construction of a Residential (Class 1 and 10 buildings, maximum two storeys). Work through the Project Worksheet to guide the required information for each stage of the building.
The project stages cover:
Assessing the structural integrity of the construction project – includes confirming compliance with general requirement and performance requirements of NCC
Planning and documenting the structural principles of the construction of a building
Pre-commencement site inspection to confirm analysis
Applying the technical construction principles and concepts to the appropriate selection, integration and building of construction elements and components
Planning, coordinating, implementing and checking the installation of footings, flooring, walls, roof systems and cladding
You are required to submit copies of the site plans and other relevant documentation as evidence for this project. On-site video and photographs are a key form of evidence required for assessment and will be assessed through observation by your assessor. These are outlined throughout the project worksheet and the “What to Submit” section

Analysis: Options and variations
Builders often look at possible variations to building proposals that potentially introduce a range of benefits to the project such as time and cost savings, while maintaining or improving quality and compliance.
For example, the project soil report might recommend a conventional raft slab, but your company specialises in contemporary waffle pod
slabs which can be installed quicker and cheaper. This alternative must be referred to and approved
by the structural engineer, and all drawing
amendments approved by the building surveyor.
Did your project install alternative structural material that was different to the original plans? This can be in regard to any structural component. The alternative must be considered a new or more recent or emerging
material or approach or technology compared to Satisfactory

the original. If so, explain the process
you followed to:
identify the opportunity for a possible alternative
determine the reason for the alternative
confirm that the alternative complied with structural integrity standards and codes to at least the same level or higher than the original
seek approval from
structural engineer and building surveyor
Explain the outcome - what happened - and report on the benefits to the project. Submit evidence of engagement with industry professionals.
If this did not occur, use the example of the alternative slab and explain how you would go about implementing this variation based on the same points above. Create a sample email to
show how you would communicate the changes to the structural
engineer and building surveyor.

Record and submit a video of yourself completing a pre-
commencement site inspection. Check the site and observe all existing conditions. Complete the checklist while recording the video. Explain each item as you inspect it. The video recording must be submitted to your assessor. Submit a copy of your completed Pre-
