process of understanding the support services available and the study skills required for their course. The parts are:
Part 1
– Transition support services (Week 1 and 2)
Part 2 - Creating study plans Week 15 (ongoing review Week 4, 8, 12)
Part 3 – Study skills (Week 8)
Part 4 – Overcoming barriers (Week 15)
Students will research and analyse the support services available to them and the support that they may require during
their studies This assessment will also show the research and analysis that the student has undertaken to understand the study skills required for their selected course. They will also analyse the study skills that they need to improve on and develop study plans on how they will improve these skills and manage their time. Completing this project allows you to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to research, plan and review a study pathway for tertiary study.
Assessment Instructions
Read the instructions carefully. All parts that are highlighted in blue indicates what must be completed.
What
An important step in planning to start a tertiary course is having the study skills to undertake the course successfully and what support you can access if you need help. In this assessment you will be researching study skills needed to successfully undertake a tertiary course and the support that is available to you during your studies.
Part 1 Transition Support Services
1.1
Knowing
where you can get help to support you in your transition to tertiary studies is important. Your teacher will have outlined the support services that students can access, you now need to research these support services, find out what help they provide and consider how they would be useful to you. This should include the different student support services provided by RMIT https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/contact-and-help/support-services
. List the three most useful support services for you, describe the services they provide and how they would be helpful to you in the table in Appendix 1.
Part 2 – Creating a study plan (Time Management)
2.1 You will need to create a weekly planner. In this planner you will organise your day to daytime to ensure your
meet all your study requirements.
Students should access the RMIT Learning Lab “Getting Started” and select the “Managing my Time, Tools” tab. https://emedia.rmit.edu.au/learninglab/content/tools
. From this download the weekly study planner and follow the instructions on how to fill it in. Remember to be realistic, put in work and social commitments.
Students should consult with their teacher for feedback as they complete this planner if required either in class or through Canvas.
2.2
You will also put together a study plan for your current course. You should create one plan that plots out the requirements for the whole of your current course
Access your Canvas Calendar. Make sure you have access to all of your courses. Look at the due dates
of each assessment.
Use the Calendar to see when you have assessment due for each unit and any other important dates.
Fill in the “To do” section on each week when you will be working on each task. Use your weekly planner 2.1 as a reference. This will be updated throughout the semester Week 4, 8, 12.
This will give you a big picture of what you need to have done and by which date. Part 3 Study Skills

Considering type of course/s that you wish to undertake, find the type of study skills you will require for the course. You can do this by talking to your teacher, talking to careers advisers, teachers or program managers of the course or course outlines. Once you have identified the study skills, where can you go to learn more about how to undertake those study skills and get help with them. Again, refer to RMIT’s support services for information. You may want to do the quizzes in ‘Are you Uniready’ at https://emedia.rmit.edu.au/dlsweb/slc/UniReady/
, this may help you find areas where you need more help. In Appendix 2 Study Skills list at least five different study skills that will be required, why they are important and where you can get help with them. These can include planning for study time, undertaking, independent reading and research, attending lectures, preparing for and participating in tutorials, reflecting on learning, setting goals and working with mentors
Part 4 Overcoming Barriers
4.1
You have now researched the transitional support available to you and the skills you need for the course you want to do. It is now time to think about your own situations, what would be some barriers (difficulties) that you face in undertaking tertiary study successfully (see the list below). List at least three barriers and which of those study skills or support services that you could use to help to overcome these barriers. Fill your answers into the table in Appendix 3.
These could include (but are not limited to) personal circumstances such as educational, financial, social or medical barriers, lack of time management skills, organisational skills, poor literacy or numeracy, planning for study time, undertaking independent reading and research, attending lectures or preparing for and participating in tutorials
