Nested Virtualization
Introduction
In this project, you examine a virtual machine nested inside another virtual machine. Keep in
mind that the number of VMs you can nest depends on the host machine’s hardware. For this
project, you use both VMware Workstation Player and VirtualBox.
Objectives
In this project/lab the student will:

Create a virtual machine inside another virtual machine.
Equipment/Supplies Needed
●
VMWare Workstation
●
Ubuntu ISO
Procedure
1.
Create a new virtual machine using VMware Workstation Pro and install Ubuntu
Desktop.
2.
From Ubuntu Desktop’s toolbar on the left, open the Ubuntu Software
application by clicking the icon.
3.
Search for and install VirtualBox.
4.
Open Firefox on your VM and browse to
HERE
5.
Download the latest version of the Ubuntu Desktop ISO.
6.
Open VirtualBox inside the VM and create a new Ubuntu VM.
7.
Open the Virtual Machine Settings in VirtualBox, click Processors in the Device
Menu, and make sure “Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI” is enabled.
8.
Use the Ubuntu Desktop ISO you downloaded to install Ubuntu Desktop in
VirtualBox.

Take a screenshot showing the Ubuntu Desktop running inside VirtualBox inside the
Ubuntu Desktop running on VMWare Workstation.
