Analyze your Digital Footprint
Introduction
Social media offers investigators many opportunities to collect evidence in support or defiance of
a charge. Social media intelligence has become a standard part of many investigations.
Objectives
In this project/lab the student will:
●
Perform a Public Records Search
●
Perform a Search Engine Query
●
Perform a Dark Web Search
●
Examine a website’s Cookie Compliance
●
Toy with Twitter Analytics
●
Evaluate an online “brand”
Equipment/Supplies Needed
●
Reliable Internet Access
Procedure
A digital footprint is a trail of data you create while using the Internet. It includes the websites
you visit, emails you send, and information you submit to online services. A passive digital
footprint is a data trail you unintentionally leave online. Websites that install cookies on your
devices, apps and websites that use your geolocation, and social media that uses your likes,
shares and comments to profile you are examples of a passive digital footprint
.
Note: Please feel free to redact or mark over any sensitive information in screenshots you
provide for this assignment.
Perform a Public Records Search
1.
In the browser of your choice, visit
https://www.peoplefinder.com/
2.
Enter your name, city, and state, then click Search. People finder will begin
searching federal, state, and county data sources.
You are not putting any
additional information online, only searching what is already there.
3.
In a few minutes, your results will appear. Was the service able to find you? Take a
screenshot and describe which of the facts the service got right or wrong about you.

1
The name and relatives is right. My age is wrong and I’ve never lived in San Antonio
or Spruce. Kylie is also my wife.
4.
People finder is an example of a service that publishes Public Records. Visit
https://www.nextrequest.com/blog/what-is-a-public-record
and list five of the public
records these results can come from.
Perform a Search Engine Query
1.
I’m sure you’ve Googled yourself in the past, but have you ever Yandexed yourself?
Different search engines use different searching algorithms and can produce unique
results. Choose three alternative search engines from the list below and use them
to search your name.
a.
https://yandex.com/
- Russia based
b.
https://www.lycos.com/
c.
https://duckduckgo.com/
d.
https://www.excite.com/
e.
https://www.ask.com/
f.
http://www.baidu.com/
- China based
g.
https://www.mojeek.com/about/
h.
http://www.gigablast.com/
2.
Describe your results:
a.
Did you find anyone else online with your name? Identify the link
b.
What was a link that showed up on every search? Was it you or someone else
with your name?
Someone else with my name. A common search/link looks like there’s a
photographer and a boxer with my name.
c.
Did any of the searches produce more unique results?
They were roughly the same. Some of the search engines didn’t have as
much results as others.
Perform a Dark Web Search
A "breach" is an incident where data has been unintentionally exposed to the
public, usually due to insufficient access controls or security weaknesses in the
software. You will use a website that aggregates breaches and enables people to
assess where their personal data has been exposed.
1.
In the browser of your choice, visit
https://haveibeenpwned.com/
2.
Enter your email address and click the “pwned?” button.

3.
Has your email address been involved in any data breaches? List them and what
data was compromised in the breach.
Unfortunately, yes.
4.
5.
Dailymotion
: In October 2016, the video sharing platform Dailymotion suffered a data
breach
. The attack led to the exposure of more than 85 million user accounts and included
email addresses, usernames and bcrypt hashes of passwords.
6.
Compromised data:
Email addresses, Passwords, Usernames
7.
8.
Nexus Mods
: In December 2015, the game modding site Nexus Mods released a statement
notifying users that they had been hacked
. They subsequently dated the hack as having
occurred in July 2013 although there is evidence to suggest the data was being traded
months in advance of that. The breach contained usernames, email addresses and
passwords stored as a salted hashes.
9.
Compromised data:
Email addresses, Passwords, Usernames
Examine a website’s Cookie Compliance
1.
In the browser of your choice, visit
https://www.cookiebot.com/en/
.
2.
Enter a website address in the blank and press the “Check my website” button.
3.

You may be required to confirm your email address. After completing that process,
you will get an email from Cookiebot called “Compliance test results for xxxxxx”.
This may take several minutes as this service scans multiple links on the site.
5.
Open the email and view the results in the PDF attachment. Attach this report to
your assignment.
a. Describe one cookie - where does it send data? Where was it found? What is
the cookie’s purpose?
Toy with Twitter Analytics
1.
In the browser of your choice, visit
https://socialbearing.com/search/user
2.
Enter the twitter handle of any public user (it doesn’t have to be yourself, but it can
be). Click the search button.
3.
Take a screenshot of the results you found. There is a wealth of information here to
view! Answer the following questions:

Evaluate an online “brand”
Your digital footprint goes a long way to establishing your online brand. Since we
aren’t all influencers, we will examine the key metrics and trends of an influencer to
see how far their impact reaches. Like a Google Alert that incorporates some
artificial intelligence.
1.
In the browser of your choice, visit
https://www.talkwalker.com/social-media-
analytics-search#
2.
In the blank, enter the name of a current influencer and click Search. If you need
ideas, here is a list:
https://hypeauditor.com/top-instagram/?
source=imh&marker=widget.rating2
3.
Create an account on the next screen and verify your email.
4.
Talkwaker will load to a “Key Metrics” page. Categories on the left side of the screen
will guide you through the data.

5.
Click the Top Themes button on the left toolbar to view a word cloud of related
hashtags. Choose one of these to open an overview of this theme.
You can see
every time this hashtag was used and all of the metrics associated with it. Take a
screenshot.
6.
Click the Influencers button on the left toolbar to view other influencers who have
each mentioned the influencer you chose. Which influencer has created the most
buzz and how many engagements per mention were found?
I searched SpaceX and the highest reach was 5.2m by a ryan saavedra
Click the Demographics button on the left toolbar to view the demographics
associated with those who are interested in your influencer.
a.
What is the gender breakdown?
71.5% male, 28.5% female
b.
What age group likes this influencer the most?
25-34

d.
What is the top occupation and at what percentage?
Other at 35.4%
e.
How could this information be useful?
Useful to find detailed information about someone and get additional
information that is needed for your research.
Conclusion
In this lab, we have covered a large amount of territory! We began with searching public
records, then performing a search engine query that could have used those records. We
explored data breaches on the dark web to see if our privacy had been compromised. We
examined cookies, one way in which these breaches could occur. We also played with the
reach of online social networks and how we can dig into their data to understand how
people interact with each other and the Internet as a whole. These interactions are used
in investigations to produce evidence to prove innocence or guilt as well as provide a
character witness.
