Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) are crucial
aspects of protecting and managing various forms of intellectual creation, especially in the digital
era. Some of the key aspects of Intellectual Property are Copyright, Patents, Trademarks, and
Trade secrets. Some of the important aspects of Digital Rights Management are Access Control,
Encryption, Watermarking, and License Management. Copyright Protects original works of
authorship, such as literary, artistic, and musical works. Patents protect inventions and
discoveries and trademarks protect symbols, names, and slogans. Trade secrets protect
confidential business information. DRM allows technologies and techniques to control access to
digital content. It restricts the ability to copy, share, or modify digital files. DRM often uses
encryption to protect digital content during transmission and storage. This prevents unauthorized
access and distribution. DRM systems commonly use licenses to define the terms under which
users can access and use digital content. This includes restrictions on the number of devices, time
limits, etc. Digital watermarks can be embedded in media files to identify the copyright owner.
This helps in tracking and preventing unauthorized distribution.
Recently a researcher in Missouri has enabled generative AI technology and it is capable
of producing and interpreting prompts, and arts, and it can take massive amounts of data and
design pharmaceutical and architectural plans from it. This has led to questions about intellectual
property and its legal status. It seems like multiple infrastructures have lined up to sue these AI
companies because they are training their system to write without their permission.

The main highlight from the homework readings that stood out to me was the early
history of IPR. I learned that before the introduction of the printer press in Europe that happened
in the 12
th
and 13
th
centuries, there were no publishing industries. Multiple items were copied
without the author's consent such as Bibles, legal edicts, and old books. Since there was no
market for these items, there was no need for copyright protection. Everything was done by hand
which made the labor hard and intensive,
Blockchain technology and AI technology are two of the biggest emerging technologies
that are affected by the changes in the world today when you are considering IPR and DMR.
Blockchain provides a decentralized and tamper-resistant ledger, which can be used for recording
and verifying intellectual property ownership. This can streamline the process of copyright
registration and reduce infringement. Blockchain can enhance DRM by providing a transparent
and secure way to manage licenses and transactions. It can also enable microtransactions for
content usage. AI-generated content raises questions about authorship and ownership.
Determining the intellectual property rights for AI-generated works is an evolving legal
challenge. AI and machine learning can be used to enhance DRM systems, enabling more
sophisticated content recognition, fingerprinting, and predictive analysis to prevent unauthorized
distribution.
When I think about how the future might look like because of emerging technologies like
IPR, and DRM, the changes we will see will be massive. I think the legal structure of IPR and
DRM will have to be addressed down the line and it has to evolve. When you consider the
consumers and their interests, it will be critical to work together with them so that these
opportunities continue to flourish. My final thoughts on IRM and DRM are that it is a necessity
in multiple industries because of the constant pirating that exists today. Many industries are

losing more and more money because of pirated streams and this issue has not been resolved yet.
I believe if this continues to be a theme, we will come to a point where severe legal action will
be taken.
