Introduction
Planning a trip can indeed be stressful. It involves multiple components such as flights,
accommodations, and activities. However, the internet has revolutionized the way people plan
their travels. Nowadays, individuals can conveniently book their entire trip through a single
website, simplifying the process and saving time. In this paper, we will delve into the world of
online travel sites, exploring two different platforms and analyzing their features, user
experience, and overall efficiency in helping travelers plan their trips. Additionally, we will
discuss the potential application of blockchain technology in the travel industry, examining how
this innovative technology can enhance the security, transparency, and trustworthiness of travel
sites. We will be traveling to Phuket, Thailand, where 1,500 US dollars equals 51,903 Thai Baht!
(Currency Converter, 2023).
Travelocity
Upon accessing Travelocity, the interface immediately presents you with a section
specifically designed for inputting your travel information. Since we are planning a trip, I clicked
the vacation tab so that the website creates a package for me. After viewing several different
hotels, I chose the Four Seasons by Sheraton Phuket Patong Beach Resort. Other than the
advertised resort, this was the first hotel to show up on the list because it was the highest rated.
After choosing the hotel, I was brought to the airline section. There were many different options
to choose from depending on what time you wanted to leave and arrive. The total of the trip was
$2,843.63 (Travelocity, 2023). Travelocity provided only a consolidated cost summary
comprising the grand total, subtotal, taxes, and fees, without offering a detailed breakdown of the
expenses for the hotel and airfare.
KAYAK

Similar to Travelocity, KAYAK also offers a user-friendly interface that includes a section
for entering travel details, accompanied by tabs for easy navigation. Once again, we opted for the
packages tab to explore available options. Again, the Four Seasons by Sheraton Phuket Patong
Beach Resort was the first resort to show up on this list. On KAYAK, this resort was rated 8.7
compared to 9.2 on Travelocity. Once, I selected my resort, I was then brought to Priceline to
complete my airfare and complete my trip. My total on KAYAK/Priceline was $3,640.37
(Priceline, 2023). Once again, I was not able view a breakdown of the hotel and airfare, just one
grand total.
Blockchain
A blockchain refers to a decentralized database or ledger that is collectively maintained
by nodes in a computer network (Hayes, 2023). Blockchains are noticeably used in
cryptocurrency, but they are being used more and more in a different fashion. The data in
blockchains are unable to be changed. Now that I described Blockchains, we will see how I
would use Blockchains in planning a trip.
A way blockchains could help plan a trip is by having
websites like Travelocity and KAYAK allow users to pay their trips with cryptocurrency like
Bitcoin, for example. When you book through a website like the ones above, you enter your
credit card information which is connected to a bank. There are many ways this transaction can
go wrong, causing a delay in planning your trip. With a ledger, there is no “middle man” in this
scenario. You skip the bank part and you purchase the trip with your choice of cryptocurrency.
Not only is the money available instantly, but your money is also secure. As we mentioned
above, data in blockchains are impossible to be altered. As I did more research, I found that
blockchains can be used to store your itinerary (Blockchain, 2022). Planning any trip, especially
one outside of the country, can be stressful.

room could be devastating. With blockchains, every entry is recorded. Using this will ease the
minds of travelers, as all this information is stored.
Conclusion
I examined the process of planning a trip outside of the United States with a focus
on utilizing online travel planning sites, Travelocity and KAYAK. We explored the features, user
experience, and overall efficiency of these platforms in assisting travelers with their trip planning
needs. Additionally, we delved into the concept of blockchain technology and its potential
application in the travel industry. The security of blockchain technology has the capability to
transform the manner in which we plan our trips, providing improved convenience and
reliability. As we push forward with the ever-evolving landscape of travel planning, it is essential
to remain open to emerging technologies and innovations that can simplify and make us feel
more secure with our travel experiences.
