1-2 Activity: Analyzing Cloud vs. On-Premise Solutions

IT 423: Computing as a Service
Analyzing Cloud vs. On-Premise Solutions
When a company considers moving from an on-premise to a cloud-based system, it is
important to consider the costs associated with maintaining the private cloud in which the system
is located. The cost of moving to a cloud-based solution will be high at first but will decrease
over time. The cloud provider will handle routine maintenance and upgrades, as well as provide
better security.
Personnel
To prepare for a smooth transition and assist with setup, most organizations will require training
and personnel. The type of personnel required depends on the organization's size and structure.
Smaller organizations may only need a few technical specialists, while larger organizations may
need more staff with specialized skills. The cloud provider will also provide technical support
and assistance in case of any issues or outages. The cloud solution will be more reliable, scalable,
and secure than an on-premises solution. When it comes to working with cloud-based systems, it
takes a little more training since it requires an understanding of the cloud provider's platform and
tools. In order to access the available features, personnel will need to be trained on how to use
the platform. Personnel will be able to fully utilize the cloud's capabilities with the proper
training.
Hardware and Software
In an On-Premises environment, you usually have a server room where your hardware is located.
In an On-Premises environment, you also have to maintain and manage the server room, which
can be a hassle. You need to keep the room temperature constant, ensure that the servers are
regularly updated, and make sure that the server room is secure. Fortunately, the cloud takes care
of that for you. You don't have to manage the server room, and your data is kept in a secure,
available environment. It provides better security as the cloud provider is responsible for
protecting your data. With cloud computing resources, you can achieve better performance than
with dedicated servers.
Cost savings are also a major advantage of the cloud. Unlike an on-
premise environment, you can easily scale up and down depending on your needs.
Utilities
In an on-premises environment, cooling and electricity are concerns because servers need to be
kept cool and companies need plenty of electricity to power them. Besides maintaining stable
power, companies should also consider the risks of power outages so that servers are not
disrupted. In a cloud environment, cooling and electricity concerns are eliminated. Cloud
providers maintain servers and keep them cool. You don't have to worry about your servers
getting too hot or running out of power. Both environments should also look into backup services
to ensure their servers remain operational in the event of a power outage.
Security
On-premises environments are more vulnerable to hacking attacks since they are
physically accessible. It is easier to hack into physical servers. A lack of redundancy and backups
can lead to data loss. It is important to have a strong security system in place to protect data from
attacks. On-premises environments need regular backups and system updates to stay secure. The
cloud environment can be more secure than on-premises environments since it is often managed
by a professional security team. Cloud platforms are also regularly updated with the latest

security patches, which helps to keep data safe. They are also equipped with advanced security
features such as encryption, firewalls, and antivirus software. These features help keep data in
the cloud safe.
Potential Costs
The potential costs for the on-premises environment are much higher than the cloud
environment, because on-premises systems require regular maintenance and security updates.
There are also more resources required for on-premises systems, like physical space, electricity
and cooling, and expensive hardware. On-premises systems are also harder to scale because they
need more resources as they grow. Alternatively, the potential costs of the cloud are much lower
than those for on-premises or private servers because most of the resources, such as physical
space, electricity, and cooling, are provided by the provider of the service. Services that will need
to be paid for are data transfer, software licenses, and server maintenance but all of the costs
would be included in the service fee.
